Two weekend victories lifted Bradford Dragons to joint second in the English Basketball League National Division One table.

Dragons slayed mid-table Tees Valley Mohawks 89-71 at home before cruising to a 90-59 win at basement boys Leicester Warriors the following day.

The Dragons’ team defence swarmed all over the high-scoring Mohawk guards on Saturday and a buzzer-beating triple from Nathan Ashley saw them go in at the first break 29-13 in front.

The second quarter was much the same and the Dragons threatened to run away with the game at 52-26.

Mindful of the Leicester game the following day, and with several players returning from injury, Dragons eased off in the third stanza as coach Chris Mellor rotated his squad.

They led 70-51 at the final break, with the dangerous Alex Greven then finding his range for the Mohawks in the last quarter to give a final scoreline of 89-71.

Dan Foley led the scoring with 29 points, Rihard Sulcs hit 20 and Chris McGrew 16.

Against Leicester, it was McGrew who led the way with 15 points, closley followed by Ashley with 13 and Foley with 12.

The Dragons’ next EBL Division One home game is against Team Northumbria on Saturday, tip-off 6.15pm in the sports hall of Bradford College on Trinity Road.

Elsewhere for Dragons, the under-14s romped home 86-58 against derby rivals Leeds Carnegie to stay second in the EBL North Division with three games to play.

The under-13s’ latest victims were Cheshire Wire, who were sent packing 103-68, and Oldham Titans’ first and second teams, who they beat 91-61 and 85-58 respectively to extend their perfect record this season to 16 matches.
