Francis Cummins targets fresh Bradford Bulls blood ahead of Wakefield clash

Francis Cummins could add to his squad ahead of Thursday’s crunch trip to Wakefield after the Bulls slipped to defeat in their Super League opener yesterday.

Castleford ground out a 36-18 win but Cummins took consolation from the spirit his players showed in their first outing since the departure of Garreth Carvell and Jarrod Sammut.

Having signed Danny Bridge on loan from Warrington last week, the Bulls head coach is seeking to bring in further reinforcements, with a new prop his priority as opposed to a replacement for Sammut.

Cummins said: “I’m more than happy with the two half-backs because Lee Gaskell and Luke Gale were going to be my two anyway, so we probably need to look at other areas.

“I’m in talks with a few players at the moment and those talks have been really positive – but you never know until it actually happens.”

The scores were level at 6-6 at half-time after Weller Hauraki cancelled out Danny Addy’s early opener.

Although tries from Jamie Foster and Adrian Purtell either side of Kirk Dixon’s touchdown put Bradford 18-12 ahead, Castleford claimed four more scores through Daryl Clark, Justin Carney, Luke Dorn and Grant Millington.

It was harsh on the Bulls, who faded badly during an error-strewn final quarter, but Cummins took heart from his side’s spirit.

“I’ve never questioned the character of the side but it’s that smartness we need at the moment,” he said.

“We made a few yardage errors which allowed Cas back into the match and we gave it back to them too cheaply in the second half.”

The Bulls are set to learn this week if they are to be docked points for entering administration for the second time in less than two years.

Cummins spoke of his frustration at the off-field uncertainty as a number of parties, including the current board of directors, battle for ownership of the club.

The Bulls head coach referred to events surrounding the 66-10 friendly defeat to Castleford two weeks earlier when he said: “There were all kinds of things going on around the friendly game; things that I’ve not seen in rugby league before.

“There was dishonesty around the place before the game, not on the field, and emotionally we weren’t ready to play.

“We made some errors at the back end of today’s game but I’m proud of everyone involved in the club – the players, staff and directors – because there are people working really hard.

“The whole saga at the club, right from when it (administration) happened before, needs to be looked at; how the game dealt with it and how the clubs dealt with it because it’s not been a good time for the sport.

“There is no doubt there has been some mismanagement at the club – there has been for years and years – but the way the game has dealt with it has just been poor. This is people’s lives we are talking about here.”

Tom Olbison took a bang to the head and is rated as doubtful for the trip to Wakefield, which could see the Bulls face a quick reunion with Sammut.

We need to add size to the pack, the forwards are simply not big enough, no lack of effort yesterday and Gale & Gaskell looked good at times but Cas won that game because they were physically bigger and we tired through the arm wrestle, hence all the mistakes 2nd half.

Have I woken up back in 2013

Didn't we here this after every defeat last year

Spirit & character
REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Second half defense was pitiful & the under nines that played during the break were tackling better

So Gaskell was always going to start in front of Sammut was he no wonder Jarrud wanted out

Suugest someone introduces Gaskel to the tackle bages thsweek as at least two tries went over the top of him

More frustrating however was the ill discipline & dumb decisions that kept gifting Cas field position after we had done the hard yards on most occasions they went on to score from the yards we had gifted them

This coupled with Bulls inability to make the pressure count & turn field position into points in the first half needs looking at if we are to have any chance of surviving this year

Sad to say that survival is about the only thing we have to hope for this year talk of play offs is just a load of BS that team will not be able to compete with the top 8

Agree Gaskell looked good, Kear and foster did extra work, but our forwards did not turn up, last 20min all Cas had to do was drive up middle.

BUT Gale was rubbish from start to finish his kicking game was terrible, never rated him cannot see for the life of me why we improved his terms. Finns kicking on the over hand for Cas was very good and he will surprise a few this year very good signing IMO

Where is Dale Ferguson ;-) is he another on his way

You are absolutely right.,it is how the game as evolved over the last few years. The main criteria for assessing players now,Is how big they are and how fast they can run.Apart from a few exceptions, a good big'en is better than a good little'en any day!

They have been strongly linked with Mason and Mexico. But the two HKR PNG players couldn't get a visa so there could be some doubt that Mexico can get one. Signing both would be a boost though as we desperately need two more tough men in there plus Ferguson. Our pack was well beaten yesterday which made it hard for our two halves. I do think Gale and Gaskell will go well. I always stated I thought Sammut would be a bench player and a possible hooker. That is why I believe we can live without him BUT the forwards need to win the battle in the middle for them to show their skills.

I have noticed a few teams now go with just one good hooker. It does puzzle me why we have to have two hookers when forwards are needed on the bench. Maybe when Disco retires O'Brien can do 80 mins.

Interesting to see Franny opening up a little and saying a little about what he thinks about the goings on behind the scenes. The players and staff must be so pi**ed off it can't be easy to concentrate on your job.

e's not world class, but he's got nuts, size, and will get stuck in. That's what we needed yesterday in the last quarter.
It seems to me hat the pack just is not big enough, especially without Carvell. Mason has been around, knows the game and will give us the power we are lacking. We are missing Langley now...I know he was not world class either but could have stepped up into the front row.
Too late now, let's look to the future. A Dad's Army pack can do the business for a while.

Always been a great fan of Langers but given his injury record over the last couple of seasons his salary requirements were just too high in the current circumstances

I was hoping there was a sell on clause in the contract like you often see in the round balled game... However I imagine if there was it would have been to the company who owned us before the last company that owned us before the last one...
