Gray cloud lifts: Words of encouragement from Bantams boss for striker back on the scene after year to forget

A broken arm, nerve damage in his leg and the form of James Hanson have all conspired against Andy Gray

Phil Parkinson insists Andy Gray will have a role to play in the remainder of City’s season.

The veteran striker stepped in for the injured James Hanson at Wolves to make his first start since promotion.

Hanson is hoping to return to training today after an injection in his hamstring earlier this week. But Gray will be on stand-by to deputise again for the Valley Parade clash with Crewe on Saturday.

Gray’s last home game was almost a year ago against Dagenham, three days after the Capital One Cup final.

With Aaron Mclean sacrificed before half-time at Molineux following Nathan Doyle’s red card, Gray was left to plough a lonely furrow up front.

But Parkinson was pleased with his effort in a losing cause – and hopes it is a sign that the 36-year-old forward’s luck is changing.

He said: “Andy came in and did well in James Hanson’s place. He held the ball up well and gave a good account of himself considering he hasn’t played much football this year for one reason or another.”

Gray has had a tough time since returning to the club in last year’s January transfer window.

Unable to force his way past Hanson during City’s play-off charge, he then broke his arm in the opening game of pre-season.

Gray came on to score at Peterborough in his first appearance just before Christmas but he also damaged a nerve after suffering a dead leg, which kept him out for a further month.

Parkinson said: “Sometimes people look at signings and say they haven’t done this or that. But as a manager or chairman, you’ve got to look at the reasons behind that.

“When Andy signed, he was a player in need of a run of ten games because he’d gone six months without playing. But he didn’t get that because Hanson played so well in that period.

“Come the summer, Andy broke his arm against Guiseley, which hasn’t helped him.

“Then there was Peterborough, which for me was the day our supporters started seeing what Andy Gray can do. He scored a good goal but also got the injury.

“That’s completely gone now and he’s looking sharp again. Andy offers us technical ability and he can score. He’s a boost for us.”

Mark Yeates could be back in contention for the weekend after a second injection to settle an on-going knee problem. The Irishman has not made the squad for the last two games.

Parkinson said: “Yeatesy’s knee hasn’t been great for a while. He had a problem with his medial ligament but he’s getting better and hopefully he will be close.”

yeah like you leaving people on bench when we are in a rut!
to get out of it sometimes you need a change to create a spark.

In the game and a half he's played at Peterborough and Wolverhampton he's scored one and done absolutely nothing wrong, giving 100%.

It makes me laugh that anybody with an opinion which differs to PP is a member of the 'Hate Mob'. Aren't people allowed an opinion??

How anybody can justify the signing of Gray is beyond me. Yeah he's been unlucky with injuries but it's goal and performances that earn you your money.....but wait on a minute he scored against the Posh didn't he.

I'm not wanting PP out for one minute but the 1 win in 19 (i think that's right but may be wrong) is nothing short of shocking. Lets hope we turn the corner on Saturday.

I recall before Andy Gray was signed this site was full of fans saying we must have him and what a great signing he would be. Now the manager is being slagged off for giving them what they wanted. Give Andy and the manager a break. Both are better than the moaners give credit to. Suport your club and its players.

Fair point but football managers are expected to know a little more then your average fan.

Hopefully Andy Gray will come good when he plays, he certainly has the pedigree. What can't be disguised is his lack of success so far. Good luck to him and the rest of the squad for the rest of the season, we certainly have more than enough quality in the squad to finish comfortably in League 1.

Yes. By the same token people are also allowed to challenge an opinion that they do not agree with.

Strange how 'bashers' always go off in a petulant sulk when taken to task over a nasty remark (e.g. Eddie Gray)? This is generally because they are too thick to justify/sustain an argument .

Self flagulation (hope thats right) for Shaun seems a good idea. Glad you suggested something along those lines and not me. Though I hope it won't stop him giving money to City. Nick Allamby continues to voice disquiet that you allocate the wrong surname. He his worried that this 'Allenby' chap is receiving all the credit for his (unique) fitness programme, though he says its not quite as exciting as some people suggest. Glad to see Andy Gray receive some support though.

You obviously do want Phil sacked. There is a right way of expressing an opinion and a wrong way. Some people are totally irrational and it's right that this is pointed out. I'm happy to justify the signing of Andy Gray. Good cover for James Hanson as the manager points out.

Personally, I think it is disgraceful that Parkinson didn't predict that Gray would get injured in the Guiseley fixture; I mean how did he not predict that Hanson would get better and better after Gray joined and thereby render Gray as surplus to requirements. He should also have realised that he would get injured again at Peterboro and left him on the bench....shocking management not to be able to predict the future.

If you add this to the fact that PP picked Bennett and Doyle in the last two fixtures when he should have known that they would get sent off just suggests that he has no idea what he is doing. Never mind sacking him, he should be taken to Centenary Square and ritually flogged.

In fairness, he's not likely to have scored many goals when he hasn't played. Now he's about to get a chance actually on the pitch - all the negative opinions of him seem to have been based around his former club being Leeds, his salary being among the highest and his age. None of us can honestly have rated his performance as a professional footballer.

It looks like we will soon be able to and I wish him every luck.

Calm down shaun. Please don't shout. I know for a fact that Mr. Lawn and Mr. Julian and Phil plus all the other people at City really appreciate the donations you make. This despite the fact you have described these people and all the rest of the staff at City as 'Deadbeats'. And you have repeatedly called them deadbeats for several years. Andy Gray, too appreciates the money you have kindly donated to City. I do too, because I support Bradford City. Andy Gray was an intelligent signing for City by an intelligent manager. There are some good people connected with City, please will you stop calling them deadbeats? I know you are not involved and everyone appreciates the money you give, but just try to calm yourself a little. Thanks once again for giving the money. Very kind.

You obviously do want Phil sacked. There is a right way of expressing an opinion and a wrong way. Some people are totally irrational and it's right that this is pointed out. I'm happy to justify the signing of Andy Gray. Good cover for James Hanson as the manager points out.

Put it this way, if I were in a conversation on this subject in the pub and this level of understanding and education were shown I would not only think what a fool I would have to walk away for fear of laughing in the guys face.

Maybe this is what is wrong with the internetzzz, I am laughing at him but from safety, oh dear, that's bad isn't it?
Haha mugging off a 10 year old boy how nice thanks for taking the **** out of my son guys grow the feck up

I am not one of the so called 'Hate-Mob' and I have the utmost respect for Parky as our Manager, but I do think that sometimes in life you have to hold your hands up and say, I think I've made a mistake here. I was highly delighted when Andy Gray signed for us, but for whatever reason (injuries etc) I don't think that he has made the impact that we all hoped he would. I do think he will chip in with the odd goal or two, but not sure he is the right man to put us back on the winning track. I think we now need to see MacLean step up to the mark, and I'm pretty sure he can with Big James alongside him, and with a slightly more youthful midfield pushing behind them, I'm sure this will allow our defenders to play a higher line. Whatever side Parky puts out, we need to get behind each and every player, to ensure that we don't get dragged into a dog fight at the wrong end of the table.

Why was it a mistake to sign Gray? He is a top professional, very talented, very experienced and has helped Hanson improve his game. Was signing Gordon Watson a mistake or Lee Power or Wayne Bullimore?

Gray was a good signing at the time but things have conspired against him so far. That does not make signing him a mistake. 20-20 hindsight is not a talent.

Even before things conspired to go against him, he was hardly pulling up any roots. I agree he is a top professional, is very experienced and was very talented, but in my opinion he is not the person to start to get us back to winning ways. I sincerely hope that I am proved wrong.

And I don't see what Watson and the others have got to do with this, that is gone and in the past. We are talking about this season.

I've said before that Gray has been unfairly treated, due to his Leeds connections and the fact he turned us down the other summer.

I also think to show your best form you need a consistent run of games within the side.

Having said that though, I question the wisdom of signing someone who is reportedly one of our highest earners, when he was only going to ever be back up to Hanson. Surely your top earners should be first team regulars.

I remember Reid saying that Parky said he would sign him if he got back into management after Charlton, maybe he made a similar promise to Gray.

I respect your right to an opinion but whether or not I would agree with you is a separate issue.

I applied the phrase 'hate-mob' in reaction to sarcastic and cowardly remarks. Nothing to do with footballing / managing ability.

I am not arguing about whether Gray "HAS" been a success, clearly it has not gone as well as most of us would wish. I am however saying that this does not make the signing a mistake.

You can only judge a decision based on the here and now. It is unfair to criticise someone later on using hindsight. The reference to others such as Watson is to highlight the point that in sport, things often turn out differently to how you would expect dueto unforeseen events. In football, injuries and fitness in the future cannot be accurately predicted.

I still think that Gray could have a positive impact on the squad but if Hanson is fi then I would pick him first so Gray is on a loser anyway. Not Gray's fault and not PP's fault. It's not actually anyone's fault. Gray has had a positive impact on Hanson since he signed so it has not all been bad.
