Leeds Carnegie 50, Bedford Blues 6

Leeds Carnegie bounced back from their Greene King IPA Championship defeat at London Welsh with a six-try rout of Bedford this afternoon.

The hosts made a great start when Jonah Holmes broke from his own half and weaved his way through the Blues defence to put Leeds ahead in the second minute, Glyn Hughes converting.

James Pritchard and Hughes then swapped penalties to make the score 10-3 before the Carnegie kicker was again successful.

Persistent Bedford infringements led to their No 8 Joe Vandermolen getting a yellow card, and Leeds made them pay by pushing Ben Hooper over for his second try of the season, Pritchard and Hughes then again each landing a penalty.

Leading 21-9 at half-time, Leeds’ man of the match Ryan Burrows made a superb break in his own half and found Richard Beck in support, who put David Doherty in for the try, Hughes converting before adding a penalty.

Leeds showed patience to clinch the bonus-point try when Rob Vickerman went over in the 69th minute, but Bedford were then hampered by a yellow card to Paul Tupai and an injury to Tom Jubb, which led to him being taken off on a stretcher.

Carnegie were then awarded a penalty try after the Blues infringed in the scrum, and Vickerman wrapped matters up with another try, Rob Lozowski converting.
