Bradford Bulls 10, Castleford Tigers 66

The Bulls slipped to a thumping defeat in their final pre-season friendly after Castleford ran in 12 tries to give head coach Francis Cummins much to think about.

Cummins was missing a clutch of key players in Lee Gaskell, Jarrod Sammut, Garreth Carvell and Luke George while Brett Kearney and Matty Blythe remain longer-term absentees.

But it was the manner in which Bradford’s defence was so easily and so frequently breached that will have given Cummins cause for concern as the visitors ran in 56 unanswered points.

Daryl Powell’s Tigers, who included several new signings, included former Bradford skipper Andy Lynch, were superior in every department.

They scored five first-half tries, including four on the Bulls’ left edge, and touched down seven more times after the break.

Luke Dorn opened the scoring before the Bulls hit back with a well-taken try from Elliot Kear.

Kirk Dixon put Castleford back in front but Nick Scruton took Luke Gale’s neat pass to level the scores at 10-10.

Yet the visitors ran in three more tries through Daryl Clark (2) and Richard Owen to make it 26-10 at the break.

Powell’s men kept their foot on the gas after the break with tries from Michael Shenton, Weller Hauraki (2), Adam Milner and Dixon twice more to complete his hat-trick before Frankie Mariano rounded off the scoring.

Dixon’s three tries and nine conversions gave him a personal haul of 30 points on a nightmare afternoon for Cummins and his players, who meet Castleford again in their Super League opener in a fortnight's time.

Results of pre season friendlies generally have no relevance.

I can fully understand players not wanting to risk injury in a meaningless game so one has to really question the merits of arranging these matches and those who attended today watched an embarrassing display of attack v defence, when the opposition scored with virtually every attack.

I don't think there will be a repeat of this score in two weeks time but I do think everyone should be let in free for these aimless games.

Can echo a lot of what Pablo said and it is frustrating watching the drivel that was served up today by the Bulls. But it definitely will be different in a couple of weeks when influential players are back. Wouldn't have watched that performance today for free to be honest but at least the Bulls got some well needed money towards the club. COYB :-)

Good point Pablo. Having to pay to watch that total one sided rubbish is daylight robbery. Our left flank is very weak and that young kid on the wings career could be over before it starts. Sticking with Addy and purtell defending that side is poor coaching.

We have a decent squad but are still missing one more person. I have said it before and will again. We need someone like Glenn Morrison as assistant coach who will teach them how to tackle and won't accept less than 100%.

People say the result doesn't matter in a friendly> but it mattered to Castleford who put up a committed performance, and it matters to our supporters at the game who have had enough of feeling they are the lowest of the low, and having to bear the taunts of you're going down etc. etc. are hardly condusive to persuade non season ticket holders to become a new ST purchaser, friendly or not?

Foster at full back? Don't make me laugh! Kicked off on the full and we went downhill from there. 3 Foster mistakes in succession and they scored 3 tries as a result. We were garbage. No team spirit, no defence, no ideas in attack and anyone notice all tries except 1 went in on Purtills watch? Shouldn't something have been said/done at half time to stop the leak? Instead it turned into a flood in 2nd half. An absolute disgrace of a performance. Be interesting to see what 'Positives' can be gleaned from today.
Even Wigan only put 64-10 past us in the semi final at Bolton.

The young Warrington loanee Saltonstall was completely out of his depth on the wing and three quarters of the tries seemed to come down that wing. Is he actually a winger? Doe Luke George actually exist?

Agree-I thought 'friendlies' were supposed to be the trials for 1st team places-if so how come we haven't see the potential 1st team yet? Or have we???

It wouldn't matter who played on our left wing. They are doomed with purtell and Addy are defending inside. This combo was terrible last season and I can't see who else could play there !!!!!

Hopefully the kick up the backside we needed. We also need a defensive coach pretty quickly. Is Phil Vievers still looking for a job? When is St Hilllare's contract up?

I have been slated on here for saying that we do not have strength in depth and yesterday again proved my point; yes I agree if our players remain injury free we have a decent squad but this is the toughest sport on the planet and injuries do happen. All the players missing yesterday are out with injuries already apart from Carvell and he would not have made that much difference.

these games are meant to be last min tuning prior to the start of the season; it seems we need a complete service.

Got to question why FC cannot see what the rest of us are seeing that our defence is again looking poor; how many soft tries did we leak last season?

Tickets for these games should be priced accordingly £5 would be about right.

Pre season games aren't aimless. You can't go into a season without being match fit and physically ready to go.

It's a bad looking scoreline that will only be a worry if the faults aren't ironed out in training before the opener.

It will be a very hard season for the Bulls, especially with the big drop in season ticket sales and the heavy reliance on pay on the day fans.
