Stephen Darby comes clean over value of Andrew Davies to Bradford City

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Stephen Darby, pictured, and Andrew Davies impressed in City's impenetrable defence at home to Preston Stephen Darby, pictured, and Andrew Davies impressed in City's impenetrable defence at home to Preston

Stephen Darby paid tribute to the returning Andrew Davies after City’s first clean sheet in nearly three months.

Tuesday’s shut-out against Preston ended a 12-game run when they have failed to stop the opposition from scoring.

The goalless draw also heralded the long-awaited comeback after knee surgery for defensive lynchpin Davies. And Darby heaped praise on the performance of his back-four compatriot.

He said: “Dava came back in and did really well but it was similar last year when we lost him for a few months.

“That’s the type of character he is. He always keeps himself fit and looks after his body. You can see the work he put in day to day to get himself back to match fitness. It’s great to see him back out there.

“He’s a good defender and we’ve got lots of them in the squad. That’s the competition we’ve got which can only benefit us because everyone’s fighting for a place.”

City only managed one clean sheet – against Crewe in November – during Davies’ absence.

Darby, who has been a model of consistency at right back, admitted another was overdue.

“It’s been a long time coming,” he added. “We’ve been giving ourselves an uphill battle in recent games by conceding first. Keep a clean sheet and you can always build on that and give yourselves a chance. I thought we really dug in against Preston.

“The performances have been there and you can see the effort but it was good to get a clean sheet again.

“It was an eventful game. They hit the post but we had one or two chances ourselves and I thought the lads were great.”

Kyle Bennett’s early dismissal meant a tactical reshuffle and Darby was given the dual role of full back as well as right midfield – a combination he filled admirably to get forward as often as possible.

He said: “The sending off was unfortunate and we had to adapt things and change formation. Sometimes that happens and you’ve got to be ready for it and I thought we did well.

“We can take the positives from the performance and go to Wolves on Saturday with a little bit of confidence.

“Wolves are a good side but we were unfortunate not to get anything when we played at Valley Parade earlier in the season.

“We went 1-0 up and they came back with two quick goals but we gave them a really good game. There’s nothing for us to fear.”

There is nothing to fear but fear itself ... and shooting on target.

2.3 to the City would do us nicely - back of the net!!

As soon as I know Davies is in the team I feel far more confident, just think what his presence does for the whole BCFC team. We were hard to beat while he was out, we'll be a far sterner test for other teams now he's back. Having said that BCFC are far from a one man team, but Davies gives everyone at BCFC confidence.

Great to see el capitano getting back to his best, thought he was superb against SUFC and PNE.

Had me worried for a minute !.. I read 'Derby' come clean over value of Andrew Davies to Bradford City. I thought Steve McLaren had made a bid for our class defender.

Good to see Davies back in the fold we have missed him. Just one point to note a quote from Darby in this story: "He’s a good defender and we’ve got lots of them in the squad" True Davies is a great defender but we certainly do not have lots of them. We have Davies Darby Meredith and Mc hugh whos nearly ready. I dont think MCardle is up for it any more. Dont think i missed anyone else?

Perhaps you should clarify if you think the names mentioned are up to it? Your statement is ambiguous.

Also, you do not have to occupy a defensive position to be a good defender. The likes of McLean and Hanson provide excellent defensive contributions as they work towards protecting their own back four.

Wow,,, is that a sensible comment relating to football tactics, not often we see them on here. To be fair we the whole 10 outfielder sit so deep when the opposition have the ball its frightening.

I watched Preston on Thursday and, in the 1st half especially, they put pressure on our back 4 when they had the ball and gave us no time and forcing the hopeful punt up field whereas PP seems happy to let the opposition have un challenged possesion more or less upto the halfway line.

I suppose this then effectively reduces the size of the area to play in and squeezes the opposition for space. This therefore means we have 10 defenders so what you point out makes perfect sense.

This is how we set up last year against Premier League opposition last season and it worked, this is League 1 though so I would like to see a bit more pressure put on opposition defenders, as we showed on Tuesday, moments of panic cause mistakes.

Good point MC, we've got one of the better defensive records in the league and that has been without Andrew Davies for a big chunk of the season. Little steps forward this season in from what I've seen a much harder league and that isn't done without decent defending. Some fans are just super critical which is a shame.

I agree we've got plenty of good defenders. All I meant by my response was that Darby is obviously going to say his colleagues are good defenders in a press interview and not say 'McArdle's a bit crap isn't he?' as pokertee suggested.

This is how we set up last year against Premier League opposition last season and it worked, this is League 1 though so I would like to see a bit more pressure put on opposition defenders, as we showed on Tuesday, moments of panic cause mistakes.[/p][/quote]No, its you thats frightened. Phil realises you have to defend when the opposition has the ball. Your other point is simply not true. Peter300

True but he's not going to say 'He's a good defender unlike the rest of the dross the squad, except me though obviously'
I think we have got a few fine defenders, Meredith, McHugh, McArdle, Oliver, Derby, Bates and Davies, the only one that needs to convince me is Taylor from what little I've seen of him. He certainly needs to up his game when he get's a chance.
And also mindful of the fact that the team play in the third tier. I think people expect these guys to be world-beaters on occasions.
Good point MC, we've got one of the better defensive records in the league and that has been without Andrew Davies for a big chunk of the season. Little steps forward this season in from what I've seen a much harder league and that isn't done without decent defending. Some fans are just super critical which is a shame.
Exactly, City have one of the best defensive records in the division despite losing Davo. The other defenders and the rest of the team deserve some credit. I'm happy to give them some credit.

I agree we've got plenty of good defenders. All I meant by my response was that Darby is obviously going to say his colleagues are good defenders in a press interview and not say 'McArdle's a bit crap isn't he?' as pokertee suggested.
That's because he isn't 'a bit crap', he's a decent defender at this level, in fact McArdle and McHugh played a big part in beating Premiership teams last season, they formed a formidable partnership. He's also held the fort while Davies has been out. McArdle deserves far more credit in my opinion.

And that makes sense how???? Like I said, not often you get sensible comments on here!!!
