A 19-year-old man who waved a knife in the street after falling out with his drinking companion has been sentenced to eight months detention in a young offender institution, suspended for two years, a community order and 100 hours of unpaid work.

Dylan Hearsum, of Knowles Lane, Holme Wood, Bradford, pleaded guilty to affray on November 1 last year.

Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that householders on Greystone Crescent, Thorpe Edge, Bradford, called the police out to a disturbance at 8am.

Prosecutor Robert Stephenson said Hearsum brandished the kitchen knife at Craig Stanley after the pair had been drinking.

Stanley said: “Go on, stab me then” and the row spilled out on to the street.

Mr Stephenson said Hearsum was provoked after drinking vodka. He lunged towards Mr Stanley but did not touch him with the knife.

Mr Stanley then ran after him with a piece of plastic tubing, Mr Stephenson said.

Hearsum’s barrister Nick Askins said he had no convictions for violence.
