East Bradford Cycling Club – the oldest surviving cycling club in the district, having been formed in 1899 – are holding their annual awards night on Friday.

Three veteran members (aged over 40) have already been rewarded for their performances in 2013 by the Yorkshire Veterans Time Trial Association.

John Dewhirst finished fourth in the National Veterans’ Time Trial Championship and was the fastest in Yorkshire.

He was also 14th and fastest Bradford-based rider in the national British Best All Rounder competition across all age groups.

In doing so he broke a number of long-standing club records, including 271 miles in 12 hours and completing 50 miles in just under 1hr 46min – an average speed in excess of 28mph.

Karen Taylor was the fastest lady in the Yorkshire Veteran women’s category and finished 26th in the British Best All Rounder event.

Brenda Littlefair also completed the British Best All Rounder and was jointly awarded the Yorkshire Veterans Meritorious Award with her husband Jim for their efforts organising race events in the north of England during the last 40 years.

Both Brenda and Jim are lifelong members of the East Bradford Cycling Club.

The club welcomes new members, in particular children to its Saturday morning Kids Bike Club, where they can learn to ride and start on the road to becoming a future racer.

The EBCC prize-giving is at the New Tyke on Thornton Road on Friday at 7pm.
