Call for police action on ‘evil’ Bradford City fire disaster Twitter posts by small number of Birmingham City fans

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: The Bradford City Fire memorial The Bradford City Fire memorial

Police have started an investigation into “evil” abuse about the Bradford City fire disaster made by a small number of Birmingham City fans on Twitter.

A group of Bantams’ fans contacted the Championship club to report a number of tweets making offensive remarks about the Valley Parade tragedy which claimed the lives of 56 fans – including one which said it was a “shame the whole city didn’t go up in flames”.

Another by a different user includes a picture of the May 1985 tragedy with the caption: “Fireworks in Bradford are class tonight.”

Last night, a spokesman for Birmingham City confirmed details of the abuse had now been passed on to West Midlands Police for investigation and warned those involved could face stadium bans.

Some of the tweets made from a small number of accounts contain swear words or are too offensive to publish.

A friend of one of the fire’s victims, who did not want to be named, said he had seen a number of the comments and believed the perpetrators should be “named and shamed”.

“This sort of abuse has been going on for the last 18 months or so, but this is by far the nastiest.

“Usually if we see this sort of thing we ask for them to delete their tweet and apologise, but there seems to be a group of four or five people who are revelling in it.

“There is some vile stuff on there. I’ve never seen anything with that level of evil and hatred.

“They believe they can write these things online behind a wall of anonymity, but they should be legally named and shamed.

“If we see stuff like that we will report it.”

Since the abuse was reported to Birmingham City, at least one of the Twitter accounts involved has been made private and a number of tweets deleted.

A club spokesman said it responded to the reports from Bantams’ fans straight away. He added: “As soon as the offensive tweets were brought to the football club’s attention relevant details were promptly passed on to West Midlands Police.

“Birmingham City Football Club will not tolerate such behaviour and will continue to assist the police with their investigation.”

No-one at Bradford City was available to comment yesterday.

Brummies able to communicate using Twitter?? That means the theory of a thousand Chimps hitting the keyboards randomly to produce the complete works of Shakespeare must be right after all! Though this must also upset the minority mindless morons that support Leeds Utd who usually think its funny to poke fun about about the VP fire!

Normally,I brush off these sort of tweets and comments as puerile drivel, but in this case the content and volume of the posts was utterly disgusting. Well done to Birmingham City for responding quickly to deal with this situation. Keyboard trolls need to understand that they are not immune from the law.

I think these comments say more about you and the people you associate with.

These mindless minority morons that you describe are everywhere. I remember a group of Peterborough youths laughing at City fans as way back as 1991.

Putting the football rivalry aside, genuine supporters of Leeds United are more than sympathetic as was evidenced by their reaction following the disaster.

Problems also stem from toe-rags who were not even born when it happened. And this point is aimed much closer to home.

No it is not. The "thug" element exists in society; just because there are a small number of morons who use football as a vehicle for their behaviour does not mean it has anything to do with the sport. It is akin to saying that anyone who cycles is a drugs cheat.

Nobody is condoning this type of abuse; but what is it with twittering and the Police ? have they seriously nothing else better to do than to get involved in what amounts to 'playground tit for tat' between 'juveniles'. What about investigating the thousands of real crimes on the streets of Bradford or would that be too much like 'proper coppering'?.

Had the Police got involved with all the tit for tat abuse and running battles -some of it on 'racial lines'; that went on in Bradford school playgrounds and in the district during the 60's-70's they would'nt have had the time to execute their duty according to the highly effective 'Sweeney Code of Practice' deployed in the 60's-70's-80's to catch proper villians.

Bring back Regan and Carter - Real Policemen. The Sweeney box set should be essential training material at the 'copper college'.

It is very kind but please do not find it necessary to apologise. Do not feel guilt by association.

As an example, I see people apologising about EDL/BNP because they happen to be white. Inadvertently, those people are associating with this whom they despise.

I don't know where this burst came from but hopefully you will see my point!

I realise that comments like "shame the whole city didn't burn down" are in poor taste, but surely it's not against the law. Our police forces are hard pressed enough without having to deal with rubbish.

Perhaps people just need to ignore comments like and stop being so precious.
