Bradford City: Search continues to find new clubs for Luke Oliver and Alan Connell

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Luke Oliver Luke Oliver

City centre back Luke Oliver and striker Alan Connell are continuing to look at options away from Valley Parade.

Oliver, the 2012 player of the year, has been restricted to just four appearances this term, and, along with out of favour Connell, has been deemed surplus to requirements.

City boss Phil Parkinson said: “We’re just waiting for the phone to ring on those players.

“There were one or two clubs looking at Luke Oliver, one from the Scottish Premier and another from the Conference were interested in him. Alan’s also had a couple of inquiries.

“They both know the situation. Olly has been terrific for the club but because of injuries he’s probably at the stage where he needs to go out and play now.

“We are trying to get something sorted and get him some games. But it’s got to be something he wants to do.”

Partick Thistle were thought to be the club north of the border who sounded out Oliver before they signed St Mirren centre half Lee Mair.

Agreed I can't uderstand why Oliver hasn't been given a chance. He's recovered from last season's injury, if its games he needs he should have been loaned out months ago and then we would have known if he was up to it or not. He played a couple games early in our season and did ok, I remember Parkinson praising him, since then nothing. Very strange !

I see the jury is definitely split on Bates. A quality player for me, and should play next to Davies when he returns. Oliver has been a great servant, but just doesn't cut it in L1 I'm afraid.

Rather than disagreeing from the outset, why do you think that Oliver cannot cut it at League One level? I don't see how he has been given a chance to prove himself.

We are assuming that he has recovered? Otherwise, it could explain why he hasn't be involved.

Both good lads and I wish them well for the future.
It has become apparent that our squad lacks the quality and depth to challenge at the top of league one. For me its the right move to clear the fringe players out . We need competition for places to push the team forward.
On Bates I believe he is a quality player and can see him being a good foil for Davies.

Reflecting on what I said earlier, is this because he was in no fit state to be loaned out? It just seems odd in terms of how his situation has been handled. From what I understand, he is a popular character and so it does not seem as though Parky would deliberately wish to isolate him.

Agreed I remember Parkinson was all set to loan him out, then Taylor was loaned out instead so we kept hold of Oliver and he played him in 2 home games and he praised him. Seems odd he hasn't used him since to say he won every player of the season award going 2 years ago.
Suppose if Davies is back for PNE and he stays fit its all sorted, but imo Oliver should have been used over the last 3 months, his physical presence at the back has been missed.

Phil obviously favours Bates over Oliver. He thinks Bates can do a better job for City at the moment. And I don't think he's done badly. City do have quite a good defensive record as you have noticed.

The manager thinks he has better options. Good to see that you are not one of those who condemn players who have not been given a chance. It's a popular pastime on here.

It's a tricky one for any manager. Most managers will try and do their best for the players whilst keeping their options open. If there had been another injury, Olly might have got his chance. I wish Olly and Alan all the best. Both good professionals.

I've watched City in training on several occasions. Oliver runs freely and shows no ill effects of his Achilles problem from last season.

Looks like Alan Connell could be going Grimsby.
