4:54pm

City’s 2014 began in the worst possible fashion with a 3-0 defeat at lowly Notts County.
The Bantams had hoped to end their own miserable run by beating the side who began the new year on the bottom of League One.
Instead they slumped to a third defeat in four from a miserable holiday period.
Jamal Campbell-Ryce fired Notts ahead before half-time after running unchecked from the halfway line.
City, without the injured Nahki Wells, improved after the break and Mark Yeates and Kyel Reid forced good saves from home keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.
But County struck twice more in the closing minutes through Callum McGregor and Jack Grealish.

4:53pm

It's all done and the boos ring out from the away end. Grim day for City

4:49pm

It's just got even worse. GREALISH shoots across McLaughlin and Notts go 3-0 up. Start the car...

4:48pm

Five minutes of stoppages

4:46pm

And they make it count again. Campbell-Ryce leads the charge as City outnumbered and McGREGOR coolly fires past McLaughlin. 2-0 to County, game over

4:46pm

Notts on the break with numbers

4:45pm

Hanson suddenly feels very old in the three-man frontline

4:43pm

Now he's on. Bates going off

4:43pm

McGregor goes down at McArdle's feet but only the home fans are shouting for a penalty

4:43pm

Before he does, Notts on the attack again

4:42pm

Clarkson about to make his debut for City. Six minutes of normal time left to be a hero...

4:39pm

Campbell-Ryce leaves Darby in a heap as he cuts into box but drags his shot wide.

4:38pm

Booking for Ravenhill...

4:36pm

Great block from McArdle to deny Campbell-Ryce a second goal after a mistake from Darby in the City box.

4:34pm

Stunning strike from Reid and the save is equal to it.

4:32pm

Now Reid wins a corner...

4:32pm

Better spell from City as Yeates forces a save from Bialkowski with decent snap shot.

4:32pm

Crowd is 4,919 with 1,050 from City

4:28pm

Jones's free-kick clears them all...

4:28pm

Leacock goes into the book for catching McBurnie. Yeates replaces Thompson before free-kick taken

4:27pm

4:27pm

Yeates ready to come on

4:25pm

Jones hammers the free-kick goalwards and Bialkowski punches away with both fists.

4:24pm

Reid dragged down by Campbell-Ryce but foul is given right on the line on the side of the penalty area. Real border line call

4:23pm

Few verbals between the benches. Looks like it's Greg Abbott and City keeper coach Lee Butler getting involved

4:22pm

Positive run from Meredith is let down by poor cross

4:21pm

McBurnie needs some running repairs after taking a clatter. Helped to the sideline but he's fine to continue

4:14pm

Thompson switches back to his usual right-sided role as McBurnie partners Hanson.

4:14pm

Bates down for treatment after heading the back of Showunmi's head. Ouch....

4:13pm

City make a change as McBurnie comes on for Kennedy. Feel bit sorry for Kennedy who was playing out of position.

4:13pm

Jones free-kick is met with glancing header from McArdle past far post.

4:12pm

Loud chant for Olly McBurnie from City fans...

4:12pm

4:10pm

Both teams enjoying the respite from the weather. Easier to play it on the ground as Campbell-Ryce whips a dangerous ball across the face of the City goal.

4:09pm

Clever play from McGregor to win Notts corner.

4:07pm

Big chance for City. Meredith cross nodded down by Thompson and Hanson can't quite wrap his foot around the ball from close range. That's better

4:06pm

Darby overlaps promisingly on right wing but fouls Grealish near byline.

4:05pm

The fans are doing their bit. Now let's see if the players can match them

4:04pm

Thundering tackle from Darby on Grealish. More of that please...

4:03pm

And we're off again. Seems the rain has stopped

4:02pm

4:01pm

Here come City out for the re-start. Need to be much better

3:59pm

All the City subs are out there warming up. Suggests no changes planned for second half.

3:46pm

And that's half-time. 1-0 to Notts

3:46pm

Expect the ref to bale out the linesman by blowing now. He has - for a non-existent push from Hanson.

3:45pm

City win a corner after Bialkowski challenged by sliding Thompson. Notts not happy but may not be time to take it.

3:45pm

Good cross from Darby. Smith jumps highest to head away and Jones blocked on edge of box.

3:44pm

One minute of added time as City win throw-in near the corner flag. One last chance?

3:43pm

Reid blatantly taken out by Dumbuya. First card of the day rightly earned...

3:40pm

3:39pm

Here come Notts again through McGregor. Finally Jones gets a foot in on the edge of the box and thumps clear.

3:38pm

3:36pm

Desperate defending from Bates to slide across and intercept Showunmi's low cross as McGregor waited to tap home.

3:33pm

Notts crowd come to life with that song that sounds like the Meatballs one...

3:33pm

Notts winger launches counter-attack from halfway line then bursts in between Darby and McArdle before sliding low shot into bottom corner.

3:31pm

Break on here from Campbell-Ryce... and he scores. 1-0 to Notts

3:30pm

Roar from crowd as Showunmi outjumps Bates easily to flick ball on but intended target McGregor is flagged offside.

3:29pm

For those in the sweep, Ravenhill's first foul is after 30 mins. Notts take quick free-kick to try to catch out City but the cross is overhit.

3:27pm

Showunmi having a good moan at being flagged offside in the centre circle. Ref ignores him

3:27pm

Notts boss Shaun Derry wearing the same drainpipe trousers he had on at Valley Parade. Maybe he's not been able to take them off since....

3:26pm

So far the game is living down to expectations. No surprise with this pitch and this weather

3:24pm

City dilly dallying in the penalty area and Campbell-Ryce almost finds a way through. Definitely handled it on the way through though referee....

3:24pm

Looking like one of those afternoons for Reid so far, not really happening for him yet.

3:22pm

Jones free-kick headed goalwards by McArdle but Bialkowski holds comfortably above his head.

3:21pm

Showunmi again nods away and then does the same from Hanson as Darby crosses ball back into box.

3:20pm

It's a great one from Jones and McArdle should have got on the end of it. Instead it's Showunmi who scoops it away for another corner

3:20pm

Corner number two for City.

3:18pm

3:18pm

Another mishit cross from Reid flies behind - and he gets the bird from the home end

3:17pm

Conditions look terrible out there. Thankfully the press box is right at the back of the main stand and therefore dry!

3:17pm

Reid shakes off his double marker to get in a cross but it's a poor one.

3:17pm

It comes to nothing but City still pen Notts in with throw-in right by other corner flag.

3:16pm

Jones walks across to take it as the chorus of Cmon City booms from stand.

3:16pm

City respond with corner of their own as Thompson cross knocked behind.

3:15pm

Corner for Notts. Worked out as far as Fotheringham who drills wide from 22 yards.

3:14pm

Showunmi looks offside as Grealish long ball picks him out. Bates certainly thought so as the Notts striker found time and space for a shot - comfortably over the bar

3:12pm

Right back Mustapha Dumbuya makes Kyel Reid look a giant. The Notts number two is small...

3:10pm

Darby overlaps from Thompson's pass and his cross is headed away from Hanson.

3:10pm

3:10pm

Hanson showing his defensive side then to deal with Showunmi at Notts free-kick

3:08pm

3:05pm

Hanson flicks on from Meredith cross and ball breaks to Kennedy. But he struggles to bring it under control and fires shot straight into ground.

3:04pm

Good chasing from Thompson to force Leacock into conceding throw-in by edge of Notts box. City fans make some noise

3:03pm

Intricate passing - good effort on this pitch - from Notts to create space for Campbell-Ryce shot. But his attempted chip is woeful

3:01pm

Thompson is playing up top with Hanson and Kennedy is on right

3:01pm

Early scare for Notts as Hanson slips pass through for Thompson to chase. Lot of defenders back but panic sets in and Bialkowski has to come out of box to clear

2:59pm

Notts County get us underway kicking into the wind and rain...

2:50pm

Big cheer as Mark Stallard is introduced to the crowd as special guest.

2:49pm

Big question is whether City line up 4-4-2 or 4-5-1/4-3-3 with Thompson and Reid either side of Hanson...

2:48pm

Ten minutes to kick off and it's not got any warmer here. And it's still belting down with rain. Happy New Year!

2:48pm

2:48pm

2:25pm

2:24pm

Notts County make one enforced change after Alan Sheehan was sent off at Crawley on Sunday.

Manny Smith takes over at centre half as the Magpies look to clamber their way off the bottom of League One.

They are expected to line up 4-2-3-1.

NOTTS CO: Bialkowski, Dumbuya, Smith, Leacock, Fox, Fotheringham, Boucaud, McGregor, Grealish, Campbell-'Ryce, Showunmi. Subs: Haynes, Labadie, Murray, Thompson, Tempest, Holis, Pilkington.

2:19pm

This is also Connor Ripley's final game of his loan from Middlesbrough. Reports that City are looking at a young Harrogate goalkeeper to replace him..

2:08pm

2:08pm

2:07pm

City make two changes for the first game of 2014.

With Nahki Wells ruled out by a tight hamstring, Garry Thompson is expected to partner James Hanson up front.

His elevation up the pitch means a recall in midfield for Jason Kennedy, who is likely to play on the right. He was in that role late on at MK Dons when scoring the winner.

The other change is at centre half where Carl McHugh is replaced by Matthew Bates.

Nathan Doyle misses out with an injured groin so Jack Stockdill is added to the bench.

CITY: McLaughlin, Darby, McArdle, Bates, Meredith, Kennedy, Jones, Ravenhill, Reid, Thompson, Hanson. Subs: McHugh, McBurnie, Stockdill, Clarkson, Yeates, Connell, Ripley.

1:57pm

No Nahki Wells in the travelling party but youngsters Lewis Clarkson and Louie Swain are both here. Possibly Jack Stockdill as well.

1:56pm

1:56pm

Good afternoon and welcome from a very soggy Meadow Lane. It's been raining all day but the ground staff are working on the pitch and it looks like all systems go.

Poor poor team selection.

Kennedy isnt a winger, thompson has been rewarded for his garbage form by starting upfront.
And McHugh is dropped after a great performance when MCardle looked the weak link.
Plus Gary Jones plays his 3rd game in 6 days.

Seems PP learnt nothing from the last 2 games.

Looks like a heavy pitch. Parky might think the conditions are more suited to the players selected. It's time for Thommo to show something - maybe today's the day.
The pitch might favour long balls into Hanson, it'll be awkward in the penalty areas today, time will tell.
At the end of the day we are playing the team at the bottom of the league and the result today will say it all as far as how well equipped we are to deliver against one of the weaker teams - we couldn't beat them at home so we will be tested.
Come on City make all of us travelling supporters happy and do the business today! Happy New Year everybody....

Thommo can do no wrong in Parkys eyes. It's quite embarrassing really. Maybe he'll score today but that just papers over the cracks. Get shut I say does nothing but huff and puff after a jog. Disappointed with Yeates but he has been affected in my opinion by the continued selection of Thompson.Feel very sorry for McCugh. Given his chance and he has been solid enough to retain his place from what I have seen over Xmas.

Quite a few boos at the whistle for the first time in a while. Afraid that's the culmination of a few poor performances on the bounce. We look rudderless at the moment and midfield in particular is well off the pace. Most sides have a box to box player that can carry the ball like Pritchard or Pringles for example, but we look very static. In mitigation we have quite a few out at the moment and would hope that their return and some tinkering in the window will reverse our fortunes.

PP's got to go, he's run out of idea's. Out of every cup, 1 win in 15!! That is awful, as soon as teams nullified our long ball game (worked in lge 2, and hence the decent start to the season, 4th place!!), we were stumped. The calls for an attacking midfielder are well justified, but why don't we have at least one? That is common sense forethought. I appreciate and admire what PP has done for the team but I think he has brought us as far as he can, time for a change

Parkinson OUT!!! Enough is enough. This relegation form. Shocking result against a team that is very poor and at the foot of the table. One win in 15 games!? Parky dropped our best defender for no reason. His tactics and general football management leaves a lot to be desired.

We can not live on the past season two wembley trips etc. the bread and butter is the league and if you cannot do it in the league then I'm afraid it's time to say goodbye Parkinson.

We have one of best strike partnerships in league football yet he doesn't know how to use their strengths. Nakhi wells is off and I would not trust parky with a penny of that money. Time to bring in a manager who has some quality and will use the funds to get in good players. Parkinson had the chance to bring in quality loan players from prem clubs or even out if contract players yet he refused to do this.

It's a new year and we need a new fresh start with a new manager.

Happy new year!!! C'mon city!!'

When Hanson is on the pitch we are stuck to playing one style of football only, the long ball. thats not to say we should completely abandon this style, but its bad that we are 100% reliant on it (and we have been for some time). its clear without Wells we are screwed and i can see it being difficult for Hanson to define a roll with him gone. We would certainly have to play further up the pitch and have more players in support when he knocks the ball on. Hanson has his good and bad aspects but he should be part of a squad of player that the manager can call on to mould his team to play a particular way against a particular team. our squad at the moment is saddly lacking in these options.

Parkinson has lost the plot. Stupid team selection with all the usual useless
favourites. Why was McHugh dropped for Bates? Will be glad when Bates' loan spell is up. Please don't retain him when we didn't need him in the first place.

What was poiint in playing Kennedy out of position? Give him a chance where Ravenhill is. And everyone but Parkinson can see that the undroppableThomson is garbage up front and there are better options.

We need a goalscoring midfielder and a bit more common sense from our manager if we are going to stop our slide down the table.

The guy if a great finisher, fast, and just like Wells at Carlisle wasn't given a chance he is awesome. Tall aswell. He scored 19 goals last season on loan with Met Police. He is better than anything Bradford have at the moment. Only20 years old.... And he is a good friend of Nahki... That's my solution. He is hungry in front of goal.... Get him in... Get Jonte Smith, Bermuda International....NOW my only vision

Dont forget Kennedy played in that position for Rochdale against us and im sure it was the only time PP saw him before deciding he was a 'player' !!!! PP is unsackable unless we use the money we get for wells, then again if we dont and give it to PP it will more than likely be wasted anyway!!

Rubbish, with or without hanson in the team our only style is to lump it!

James Hanson has his flaws but he remains one of the two best strikers we have. Stephen Darby is an excellent right back, and I can hardly believe someone dismissed him as unworthy of a place in the team.

I do agree that the McArdle/McHugh central defensive combination deserves to be pursued and I feel Oliver McBurnie should only be used sparingly-probably as a sub in suitable home games.

It's clear City have hit a 'trough' of bad form and some new recruits are needed but to suggest that 'PP' should be 'thrown overboard' is ridiculous and could well make things much worse. We are not in relegation trouble and the transfer window allows for the manager to show some acumen and get to grips with our deficiencies/problem
s. He deserves the chance to carry this through.

I have been critical of our dearth of fringe talent on the subs' bench but this can change before February and we can re-launch ourselves anew. To sack yet another manager in panic/haste would be folly, in my opinion.

I did say at the start of the season this squad was lucky to go up. If Exeter had not gone into freefall City would not have made the play-offs.
None of Parkinsons signings in the summr have improved the team so this is basically a 4th division team. The only thing that amazes me is that so many people are watching them.

All teams have poor form. We will come good again maybe when davies rrturns. Leyton orient last season were a poor team until the new year when they pyt an incredible run together. Keeping them together they have gone from strength to strength this season. We lack confidence thats all and this makes the players make the wrong decisions. We havent been that poor in the all if the last 15 games and had some great performances in there. Preston, wolves, Leyton Orient to name a few even Coventry we played well after we shot ourselves in the foot. Talk of sacking is ludicrous and fools talk lets just help the team with a show of support. I'm sure parky has a few players targeted and these may help restore confidence levels and get the players back yo playing the football we were earlier in the season

I posted after the Coventry match that the Paraders have been found out by most teams in league 1. They play long ball punts up field hoping for Hanson's head and other teams can nullify this now. Mr Parkinson, i m o is a little naive in his tactics and use of players, Wembley and Swansea come to mind, as well as playing certain players that, maybe, are out of their comfort zone. The current form is relegation form, and I would hate to see that happen after last season's achievements. If a different way and strategy cannot be implemented, maybe management changes are required, and that would allow a change in style from box to box along the floor, assuming a coach could be found that advocated that way. It certainly beats the big boot and is better to watch from a spectator's view.

What a sad afternoon and I don't just mean the performance and result, I mean the booing of the team at the end. These players and management who have got the club to where it is now do not deserve to be treated in this manner. Yes, the performance was unacceptable and yes the result was dreadful, but I would imagine the players and management know that and I would also suspect that they, individually and collectively, know who is good enough for this league and who isn't. It is also shocking to read so much vitriol and bile poured out against Phil Parkinson. The man is intelligent enough to know what's wrong, let's give him the time he needs. We're not looking over our shoulders to the Conference and frankly, as has been said many times on here before, anyone who thought we would walk through this division was seriously deluded.

The fact you say we only play the long ball when hanson plays, we play it regardless! We should have wingers who can beat a man and deliver crosses for hanson to attack, then you would see a higher return of goals.

I Have never said a word against Phil Parkinson and will not do so now But we do need drastic action to stop this slump before we find our selfs back in division 4 Thomson and Jones have been good players but age has now overcome them Bates is not up to the required standard .Our midfield ie The engine room of any good team is far to slow and easily over run. We do not have enough players in the box . We lack people coming in on the near post The long ball ie Kick and Rush is not and will not work in this division. We need a good half back and a couple of good raiding forwards to back up Hanson. We need Davis back and we need to build NOW for next year and to avoid dropping into division 4. Phil Parkinson must be well aware of all this and it is up to him to get it right starting now Since the 1940s i have been with City some times good some bad and i do not want to see the bad times again only Progress Please

Careful fellas. Simon writes the stories but gets critical on twitter if he doesn't like the posts of our fans.

Since Davies' injury, we have barely picked up enough points to steer clear of relegation. Good job the season didn't start 15 games ago....! We are falling faster than Janujaz or Ashley Young in the area! Remember 2006/07? Windass left and we got relegated. Wells set to leave! Deja vu??

The board claim we are already £1m over budget. Are we likely to be running over budget again next season too? Any fee for Wells is likely to be gobbled up just as the £2.5-£3m we earned last season was. A couple of loan signings are the best we can hope for...!

PP has picked some weird and wonderful selections of late, Peterborough to name one, but frigging Kennedy on the right, despite not being able to oust the old man in the centre. Thommo lucky to get in team at moment let alone playing up front...!

But don't tell Simon Parker I said so !!!!!!!!

was on the edge of the box and passed right for darby instead of going for

Obviously teams realise that Reid is our only player with pace when Wells isn't playing, the only real gamebreaker BCFC has when Wells isn't in the team, they double teamed him and even had three on him at one point today. It's crucial that the manager brings in more pace and creativity both in central midfield (ie..Dean Furman) and possibly wide right. If Wells goes we obviously also need a replacement who wont come cheap, hopefully Wells will stay, we certainly don't want a scenario like the last time we were in league one when financial problems and poor decisions in the boardroonm cost BCFC . The manager needs to clear as many of the players he doesn't rate as is possible, and bring in a couple of real quality. No panic at the minute but the players who do come in need to be of a higher quality than those picked up in the summer and going further back to Gray. I'd also be much happier if the club picked up another experienced keeper to get a McLaughlin/ Duke sort of competition for the gloves that worked so well last season. Parkinson is a fine manager and hopefully he'll come up with the goods in January.
Burnley, QPR, Wigan, EVERYONE. PLEASE bid on Nahki Wells.

The only way our team will improve to promotion standard is by selling him or getting a new rich owner.

We so so badly need quality in midfield, a box to box player with goals in him.
We badly need a quality attacking midfielder so we can play the way other good teams do, have someone control the game and create chances/score goals behind Hanson.
We badly need a right winger (and have for endless years).

Sign Gregory, use the loan market, and use the Wells money. Please lets not have another Andy Gray january.

I'll stick with Parky for the remainder of the season, but team selections like today really test your faith in him. Gary Jones played 3 games in 6 days. Clarkson had to replace Wells, and why play Kennedy out of position against bottom of the table. ATTACK THEM.
3 games against bottom of the league, 1 point.

PARKY...Has totally lost the plot!!. Hes dropping players in form ie McHugh playing players out of position, NOT DROPPING players who are going through the horrors!!.
NO WAY....would I let him loose with any Wells money...He will end up buying more central defenders. Wait for Davies to come back which should help us stay up... and sit on the money till summer, when we will probably have a New Manager!.
Agree totally he has totally lost the plot how an earth is a youth team player and a 20 year old from Scarborough going to improve this team in a div higher than last year forgot to mention in About 20 min of the game, I was one of the 1,050 at the game today and the team and the management should compensate all the 1,050 for lack of effort. I know it cost me some £30 and can honestly say that it's part and parcel some you win and some you loose.
But the effort and organisation was none existence today and for that reason BCFC should immediatley compensate all these supporters for a wasted journey.

Also lets not get too worked up by our current position.
We are newly promoted, our aim should be mid table, and thats where we are.

We also went 3 months without a win last season, and look how that ended.

A 20 year old you've watched for 10 minutes. And McBurnie whos been on fire for the youth team.
Who says they cant improve our team?

An 18 year old kid just put in a great performance for Man Utd today

Its not like Connell does much when he plays

I have read all the letters above I just think we should give PP a little more time nobody is perfect I am sure PP feels as bad as we all do and he has to take all the blame when sometimes its the players who are just as at fault so lets all just wait a little longer remember what most of us were saying a few months ago in PP WE TRUST

I'd have gone with McHugh today, I like the Irish connection in the centre of defence, both McArdle and the kid work well together. Looks a fine prospect. Two players that will most likely go in January will be Gray (if we can do a deal with him on his few remaining months of his contract) and Bates, possibly Kennedy( on loan), De Vita and Connell also. Ripley and Folan have gone so if BCFC can move other players on there is scope to bring in a couple of quality players plus hopefully an experienced keeper.

although i agree about giving PP more time. We all could see we were weak in the center of midfield and up front. yet he has not really done anything to address it.

Terrible result. You can't help feeling that by starting Kennedy on the right as opposed to another winger, it was a purely negative move, designed to counteract the extra man they had in midfield. This is against a side that were bottom of the table.

Don't understand the fascination with Bates, as there are two centre halves who have been sitting on the bench, and are better in Oliver and McHugh. It's no coincidence to me that since he has come into the side, we have looked more vulnerable defensively, as he is small for a centre back, and we have lacked the same aerial presence, thus conceeding more goals as a result. I would let him go when his contract expires, and I can't imagine his wages would have been cheap.

This season has a lot of parallels to our last in league one. We made a great start, then went on a poor run, but looked comfortable in mid table with about the same points gap from the relegation zone as now, when Rhodes decided to let his only goal scorer, Windass go out on loan. I just hope he doesn't make the same mistake twice.
