City’s 2014 began in the worst possible fashion with a 3-0 defeat at lowly Notts County.
The Bantams had hoped to end their own miserable run by beating the side who began the new year on the bottom of League One.
Instead they slumped to a third defeat in four from a miserable holiday period.
Jamal Campbell-Ryce fired Notts ahead before half-time after running unchecked from the halfway line.
City, without the injured Nahki Wells, improved after the break and Mark Yeates and Kyel Reid forced good saves from home keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.
But County struck twice more in the closing minutes through Callum McGregor and Jack Grealish.
It's all done and the boos ring out from the away end. Grim day for City
It's just got even worse. GREALISH shoots across McLaughlin and Notts go 3-0 up. Start the car...
Five minutes of stoppages
And they make it count again. Campbell-Ryce leads the charge as City outnumbered and McGREGOR coolly fires past McLaughlin. 2-0 to County, game over
Notts on the break with numbers
Hanson suddenly feels very old in the three-man frontline
Now he's on. Bates going off
McGregor goes down at McArdle's feet but only the home fans are shouting for a penalty
Before he does, Notts on the attack again
Clarkson about to make his debut for City. Six minutes of normal time left to be a hero...
Campbell-Ryce leaves Darby in a heap as he cuts into box but drags his shot wide.
Booking for Ravenhill...
Great block from McArdle to deny Campbell-Ryce a second goal after a mistake from Darby in the City box.
Stunning strike from Reid and the save is equal to it.
Now Reid wins a corner...
Better spell from City as Yeates forces a save from Bialkowski with decent snap shot.
Crowd is 4,919 with 1,050 from City
Jones's free-kick clears them all...
Leacock goes into the book for catching McBurnie. Yeates replaces Thompson before free-kick taken
I know we have no chance of keeping Wells but we better spend well, look what happened last time when we sold Windass #bcafc— @wager7 01 January 2014
Yeates ready to come on
Jones hammers the free-kick goalwards and Bialkowski punches away with both fists.
Reid dragged down by Campbell-Ryce but foul is given right on the line on the side of the penalty area. Real border line call
Few verbals between the benches. Looks like it's Greg Abbott and City keeper coach Lee Butler getting involved
Positive run from Meredith is let down by poor cross
McBurnie needs some running repairs after taking a clatter. Helped to the sideline but he's fine to continue
Thompson switches back to his usual right-sided role as McBurnie partners Hanson.
Bates down for treatment after heading the back of Showunmi's head. Ouch....
City make a change as McBurnie comes on for Kennedy. Feel bit sorry for Kennedy who was playing out of position.
Jones free-kick is met with glancing header from McArdle past far post.
Loud chant for Olly McBurnie from City fans...
I still maintain there is an ace up the sleeve for our season. Andrew Davies. #bcafc— @aaronbower 01 January 2014
Both teams enjoying the respite from the weather. Easier to play it on the ground as Campbell-Ryce whips a dangerous ball across the face of the City goal.
Clever play from McGregor to win Notts corner.
Big chance for City. Meredith cross nodded down by Thompson and Hanson can't quite wrap his foot around the ball from close range. That's better
Darby overlaps promisingly on right wing but fouls Grealish near byline.
The fans are doing their bit. Now let's see if the players can match them
Thundering tackle from Darby on Grealish. More of that please...
And we're off again. Seems the rain has stopped
That first half was awful!! Something has to change! #bcafc— @ChrisHilton83 01 January 2014
Here come City out for the re-start. Need to be much better
All the City subs are out there warming up. Suggests no changes planned for second half.
And that's half-time. 1-0 to Notts
Expect the ref to bale out the linesman by blowing now. He has - for a non-existent push from Hanson.
City win a corner after Bialkowski challenged by sliding Thompson. Notts not happy but may not be time to take it.
Good cross from Darby. Smith jumps highest to head away and Jones blocked on edge of box.
One minute of added time as City win throw-in near the corner flag. One last chance?
Reid blatantly taken out by Dumbuya. First card of the day rightly earned...
We need to sell Wells early in the window and spend money on an offensive minded midfielder, as well as a new companion for Hanson #bcafc— @SamVarneyyy 01 January 2014
Here come Notts again through McGregor. Finally Jones gets a foot in on the edge of the box and thumps clear.
We're really good at this not winning thing... #bcafc— @buttslikehouses 01 January 2014
Desperate defending from Bates to slide across and intercept Showunmi's low cross as McGregor waited to tap home.
Notts crowd come to life with that song that sounds like the Meatballs one...
Notts winger launches counter-attack from halfway line then bursts in between Darby and McArdle before sliding low shot into bottom corner.
Break on here from Campbell-Ryce... and he scores. 1-0 to Notts
Roar from crowd as Showunmi outjumps Bates easily to flick ball on but intended target McGregor is flagged offside.
For those in the sweep, Ravenhill's first foul is after 30 mins. Notts take quick free-kick to try to catch out City but the cross is overhit.
Showunmi having a good moan at being flagged offside in the centre circle. Ref ignores him
Notts boss Shaun Derry wearing the same drainpipe trousers he had on at Valley Parade. Maybe he's not been able to take them off since....
So far the game is living down to expectations. No surprise with this pitch and this weather
City dilly dallying in the penalty area and Campbell-Ryce almost finds a way through. Definitely handled it on the way through though referee....
Looking like one of those afternoons for Reid so far, not really happening for him yet.
Jones free-kick headed goalwards by McArdle but Bialkowski holds comfortably above his head.
Showunmi again nods away and then does the same from Hanson as Darby crosses ball back into box.
It's a great one from Jones and McArdle should have got on the end of it. Instead it's Showunmi who scoops it away for another corner
Corner number two for City.
Lee Gregory bagged 2 for Halifax already, replacement for Wells? #bcafc— @jbentley1994 01 January 2014
Another mishit cross from Reid flies behind - and he gets the bird from the home end
Conditions look terrible out there. Thankfully the press box is right at the back of the main stand and therefore dry!
Reid shakes off his double marker to get in a cross but it's a poor one.
It comes to nothing but City still pen Notts in with throw-in right by other corner flag.
Jones walks across to take it as the chorus of Cmon City booms from stand.
City respond with corner of their own as Thompson cross knocked behind.
Corner for Notts. Worked out as far as Fotheringham who drills wide from 22 yards.
Showunmi looks offside as Grealish long ball picks him out. Bates certainly thought so as the Notts striker found time and space for a shot - comfortably over the bar
Right back Mustapha Dumbuya makes Kyel Reid look a giant. The Notts number two is small...
Darby overlaps from Thompson's pass and his cross is headed away from Hanson.
Gutted not at Notts county today, sounds like we've taken decent numbers again #bcafc— @Adam_Ellis1986 01 January 2014
Hanson showing his defensive side then to deal with Showunmi at Notts free-kick
Hmm I hope this confusing starting line up pays off #bcafc— @Jess_Leigh95 01 January 2014
Hanson flicks on from Meredith cross and ball breaks to Kennedy. But he struggles to bring it under control and fires shot straight into ground.
Good chasing from Thompson to force Leacock into conceding throw-in by edge of Notts box. City fans make some noise
Intricate passing - good effort on this pitch - from Notts to create space for Campbell-Ryce shot. But his attempted chip is woeful
Thompson is playing up top with Hanson and Kennedy is on right
Early scare for Notts as Hanson slips pass through for Thompson to chase. Lot of defenders back but panic sets in and Bialkowski has to come out of box to clear
Notts County get us underway kicking into the wind and rain...
Big cheer as Mark Stallard is introduced to the crowd as special guest.
Big question is whether City line up 4-4-2 or 4-5-1/4-3-3 with Thompson and Reid either side of Hanson...
Ten minutes to kick off and it's not got any warmer here. And it's still belting down with rain. Happy New Year!
RT @KeithWildman: Nice to hear some common sense from @ParkerTandA and @PulseSportTeam #bcafc— @silverbantam 01 January 2014
Come on Thompson lets have a goal, get the moaners off ya back #bcafc— @BantamsCraig 01 January 2014
@ParkerTandA not enough goalscorers on the pitch for #bcafc we need to beat bottom of table county, draw not good enough. Set pieces needed.— @FrickleyBantam 01 January 2014
Notts County make one enforced change after Alan Sheehan was sent off at Crawley on Sunday.
Manny Smith takes over at centre half as the Magpies look to clamber their way off the bottom of League One.
They are expected to line up 4-2-3-1.
NOTTS CO: Bialkowski, Dumbuya, Smith, Leacock, Fox, Fotheringham, Boucaud, McGregor, Grealish, Campbell-'Ryce, Showunmi. Subs: Haynes, Labadie, Murray, Thompson, Tempest, Holis, Pilkington.
This is also Connor Ripley's final game of his loan from Middlesbrough. Reports that City are looking at a young Harrogate goalkeeper to replace him..
Jones one of the players that needed resting for me. Not sure about the selection, but got to trust Parky! #bcafc— @hgtebantam31 01 January 2014
Feel sorry for McHugh, appauling treatment he has been solid #joke #bcafc— @ASerotsky10 01 January 2014
City make two changes for the first game of 2014.
With Nahki Wells ruled out by a tight hamstring, Garry Thompson is expected to partner James Hanson up front.
His elevation up the pitch means a recall in midfield for Jason Kennedy, who is likely to play on the right. He was in that role late on at MK Dons when scoring the winner.
The other change is at centre half where Carl McHugh is replaced by Matthew Bates.
Nathan Doyle misses out with an injured groin so Jack Stockdill is added to the bench.
CITY: McLaughlin, Darby, McArdle, Bates, Meredith, Kennedy, Jones, Ravenhill, Reid, Thompson, Hanson. Subs: McHugh, McBurnie, Stockdill, Clarkson, Yeates, Connell, Ripley.
No Nahki Wells in the travelling party but youngsters Lewis Clarkson and Louie Swain are both here. Possibly Jack Stockdill as well.
Come on lads, much needed 3 points today!!! #bcafc— @natg1286 01 January 2014
Good afternoon and welcome from a very soggy Meadow Lane. It's been raining all day but the ground staff are working on the pitch and it looks like all systems go.
