Keeper’s jersey in safe hands with Jon McLaughlin, says Bantams boss

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Jon McLaughlin has been the model of consistency this season Jon McLaughlin has been the model of consistency this season

Phil Parkinson believes Jon McLaughlin has grown into his role as City number one but insists: There is more to come from him.

City have launched a hunt for another back-up keeper as Connor Ripley prepares to leave after tomorrow’s trip to Notts County.

The youngster has been recalled from his half-season loan by Middlesbrough after starting only one game – the 5-0 JPT thrashing against Hartlepool.

Parkinson has irons in the fire to replace him but the next stopper will have to go some to shift McLaughlin.

His consistent form has not given Ripley an inkling of first-team football.

The longest-serving player at the club, McLaughlin has grasped the jersey since winning it back from Matt Duke during the promotion run-in.

Parkinson said: “Jon’s been here a few years and been in and out the team. We felt at the start we were going to give him a go at it.

"Irrespective of who we brought in, the way Jon finished last season he deserved that opportunity. That was only fair because of the work he’s put in.

“He was no problem at all when we brought in Dukey and he wasn’t in the team.

“Jon is an intelligent lad and he understands the mentality of being a goalkeeper. When you haven’t been number one for a while, suddenly playing week in, week out is a different challenge.

“But he has done well. He’s pulled off big saves in games for us.

“I do think he is still a goalkeeper who has got improvement in him. He’s still got to keep working hard on his game and Jon knows that – he wants to be the best he can.”

McLaughlin has missed only one league game – when he was rested at Cheltenham on the final day of last season – since regaining the spot from Duke in March.

Parkinson also believes he has benefited from the daily sessions with goalkeeping coach Lee Butler.

“Jon’s work in training with Lee Butler has been exceptional,” he added. “Lee and Connor have pushed him hard on the training ground and you can see the benefits.

“Now it’s down to him to keep that going and to keep working on his game.

“I have to say Connor has been great for us. He obviously wanted to play more but in terms of attitude, he has been terrific.

“We need to find another goalkeeper now and we have got a few ideas. Once the Notts County game is out of the way, we’ll be looking to do something.”

I remember when Jon was brought from Harrogate by Stuart McCall.
Stuart could see his potential. Incidentally look at how Motherwell ( Same Colours as City). have progressed under Macca's Management.
*
Yes--a sub Keeper is needed urgently now. But he needs to be of at least League One Standard.
*
The Notts. County Match tomorrow--should attract another large " Bradford Army ". Being an easy journey, straight down the M 1.
*
BUT--I see this match as another ' Banana Skin ' game. I predict another Draw.
*
I do hope 'Parky' is about to change the Squad--as from tomorrow. I would like to see City in Mid-Table, at the end of this season. With further player changes in the Summer. To develop a potential Championship Squad. Yes--It will take some money this time, which ,if money is made available ? -I hope 'Parky ' is allowed to spend--and spend wisely.

Yes, Jonny Mac has been in great form. And talking of potential, Simon Eastwood has been playing some games in the Championship for Blackburn. Great for Stuart McCall and those who supported Simon whilst he was at City. So you'll have to find a keeper who is prepared to sit on the bench and is at least League One standard. Not one who will hold out for a place in the starting-line up?

As for McLaughlin.......Hes a moderate Keeper at best!.....makes far too many mistakes.

I'm sure that Parkinson will bring in a more experienced keeper than Ripley to give him the option to change keepers if JM's form dips, could never see Ripley getting a game, , without doubt McLaughlin's best is yet to come, Keepers tend to get better with alot of experience and are probably in their prime around the age of 30 .

A Happy and peaceful New Year to all BCFC fans and players officials etc. Good luck tomorrow at Notts County fellas, lets have three points coming back up to Bradford!!!!!

Johnny Mac should be persisted with he could become a long term prospect.
Happy New Year to all BCFC players, staff, and fans.

What a year, I FINALLY got my dream of flying over from Australia with my son to watch City in a Wembley final.

Thank you to David Baldwin and your staff for all your help and hospitality.
Something I will always treasure.

At fault for Wolves 1st goal at VP, should have saved what turned out to be Tranmere's winner at home and Bristol City's goal on 11/1/14. Is that enough or shall I name some more????
