Bradford’s two snooker sides enjoyed good wins at the weekend in the Yorkshire Inter-District League.

In Division One, Bradford No 1 travelled to third-placed Sheffield No 3, a tough place to get a result against a crop of highly-talented youngsters.

Wayne Cooper won a tight first frame 72-50 but opponent Will Lemons made a break of 58 on the way to a 68-31 second-frame success.

Kevin Firth was solid throughout his first frame against Ashley Carty, winning 72-27, but English junior champion Carty, fresh from playing in the Professional German Qualifiers last week, made a superb 80 break to level the match once more.

Mark Slater started off with a break of 40, putting Bradford 3-2 in front with a convincing 78-16 win, and despite Sheffield’s Mark Turner opening up a 32-point lead in the second, Slater knocked in another good break, this time a 38 to seal a 4-2 victory for the defending champions.

Bradford now sit two points clear of Leeds at the top of the table, with Sheffield remaining in third place a further four points behind.

In Division Two, Bradford No 2 welcomed league leaders Brighouse to the Bullroyd Social Club.

Anything other than victory would ensure the side faced an uphill task in catching the top two.

Bradford champion Gareth Green started well, taking the first frame 68-26 against Andy Kitson. He then put the hosts 2-0 up with a fantastic break of 109, the highest to date in the Yorkshire Leagues. Boover Singh won comfortably in his first frame, 72-16, but opponent Martin Wainhouse stemmed the tide a little, taking the next frame 55-44 on the pink.

The final match saw Hanif Rafiq as reliable as ever, destroying Neil Connor 79-12 and 83-5 for a 5-1 result that puts Bradford into third place and only three points off top spot.

In the Bradford Snooker Championships there were wins for Peter Hamilton (Undercliffe CC), 4-1 against Damian Bentley (Undercliffe CC), while Howard Mawson from Eccleshill Victoria Cons enjoyed a 4-0 whitewash of Cue Gardens player Dave Tolson.

Wayne Downey (Undercliffe CC) beat Tony Devanney (Allerton Cons) 4-0 and Chris Tolson (Cue Gardens) was successful against Josh Walker (Undercliffe CC) 4-2.

Mawson and partner Chris Metcalfe also triumphed in the pairs, beating Undercliffe duo Anthony Herdsman and Anthony Ward 3-1. Deadline for completion is January 12.
