4:57pm

City’s London Road jinx continued with defeat despite a first goal in his second spell at the club from Andy Gray.
The Bantams have never won at Peterborough and their 14th visit ended in familiar fashion.
Phil Parkinson had changed the system in an attempt to negate the Posh style.
Matt Taylor made his first league start as one of three centre halves and Mark Yeates also came in from the cold in midfield.
But the plans went awry after 18 minutes as a Peterborough corner was cleared out as far as left back Kgosi Ntlhe, who let fly with a wind-assisted 35-yard blast that dipped into the net.
It was soon 2-0 as Shaun Jeffers fed Britt Assombalonga on the edge of the box and the striker slammed his 17th goal of the season with a quality low finish.
Gary Jones spurned a good chance for an immediate response but Peterborough continued to threaten and Assombalonga should have had a second.
Parkinson went back to the regular 4-4-2 for the second half, replacing Taylor and Garry Thompson with Kyel Reid and Gray – his first appearance of the season.
City had a go as Wells tested Bobby Olejnik and Jones saw another shot smothered after taking too long.
They grabbed  a lifeline after 76 minutes when  the subs combined and Gray converted his first goal for 15 months.
City pushed for a late equaliser but Posh had chances to put the result beyond doubt with Assombalonga missing an open goal.

In a further blow, Rory McArdle picked up his fifth booking - which rules him out of the Boxing Day duel with Rotherham.

4:53pm

That's it. 2-1 to Peterborough

4:52pm

Now it's Tomlin's turn to shoot wide from great position..

4:51pm

How's it not 3-1? With City committed, Tomlin sets up Assombalonga unmarked eight yards out. McLaughlin blocks his first effort and he slides second wide...

4:49pm

Seventh corner for Posh will eat up time

4:49pm

Darby claims a foul in vain but Jeffers goes on and whips fierce shot across City goal.

4:48pm

Five minutes of stoppages.... Nahki time!

4:46pm

City back to three at the back

4:45pm

Last throw of dice as Bates, who's had a good game, makes way for Connell.

4:45pm

Ball played out to Jones, shot blocked, back out to Doyle.... high and into the grit pyramids.

4:44pm

City win a corner. There's still hope

4:44pm

Four minutes of normal time to play

4:39pm

Very animated City dug-out as away fans make the noise.

4:38pm

"Andy Gray, when he gets the ball he's sure to score" is the chant...

4:36pm

In all the excitement, Peterborough made two subs. Payne for Anderson and Swanson for Jeffers.

4:36pm

Chance for Gray again but blocked by defender. Corner for City

4:35pm

That's Gray's first goal of his second spell as a Bantam. Game On!

4:35pm

City are back in it! Reid drills cross to near post and GRAY turns it in, 2-1

4:33pm

Yeates tries an ambitious cross-shot that sails well off course.

4:32pm

4:32pm

Sub Ephraim whips shot over the bar.

4:31pm

Getting a bit feisty out there

4:30pm

Means McArdle is suspended for Rotherham game on Boxing Day.

4:29pm

McArdle foul on Tomlin. That's his fifth booking

4:29pm

Doesn't come to anything

4:29pm

71 minutes gone and City have their first corner!

4:28pm

"Reid will tear you apart" is song as winger continues to pose City's only real threat

4:28pm

4:26pm

Loose pass from Wells gives possession back but Bates alive to threat in box.

4:25pm

Bates heads it up in air but danger still there.

4:24pm

And it's another Posh corner for a change

4:23pm

First change for Peterborough. Ephraim on for Newell 66min

4:23pm

Shout for hand ball from home side mainly comes from fans. Ref unmoved

4:22pm

Tomlin jinks way past Darby for snap-shot that McLaughlin parries. Corner number five for Posh

4:21pm

Assombalonga causing problems and wins another Posh corner off McArdle.

4:20pm

Free-kick near corner flag. Yeates' kick cleared by diving header

4:19pm

Reid getting the better of right back Little. Fans on that side urging the winger on

4:16pm

Wells near-post blast batted away by Olejnik. This is better

4:15pm

Meredith strike across goal ends up nearer the corner flag. At least City trying to have a go and fans respond.

4:15pm

Great chance for City. Reid turns Little inside out to tee up Jones but the ball seems to get stuck under skipper's feet and his shot is blocked by Ntlhe.

4:13pm

Brave goalkeeping from McLaughlin who throws himself at feet of Assombalonga after Tomlin plays striker through.

4:12pm

Little spell from City but ends with cross into nobody from Jones.

4:08pm

Bates is there again to clear McCann's kick from six-yard box

4:07pm

Meredith mistake pounced on by Anderson but Bates slides across with crucial block for a corner.

4:05pm

City switched back to 4-4-2 and it's a very open 4-4-2 with Reid on left and Yeates right.

4:04pm

Gray's last goal was in September 2012 for Leeds

4:04pm

We're off again

4:02pm

Gray's first game since Cheltenham in April.

4:01pm

Thompson and Taylor off.

4:01pm

Two subs for City. Reid is one - the other is Andy Gray!

3:57pm

No sign of Reid warming up with the other subs. Suggests he might be on for second half.

3:48pm

Peterborough 2 City 0

3:46pm

Board goes up, two more minutes. Just as the rain starts to swirl

3:43pm

3:43pm

Taylor catches Jeffers but play waved on as Tomlin strides forward with ball before driving low just wide of post.

3:41pm

Jeffers tries ambitious back flick from Anderson's cross but it is well wide.

3:39pm

Needed somebody to be gambling in there

3:39pm

Yeates takes it to back post where Taylor nods it down into the mix but nobody there to take advantage.

3:39pm

Free-kick level with edge of penalty area.

3:38pm

Yeates has chance on the ball and chips pass over top for Thompson to chase. He's dragged down by Brisley and the centre half is booked

3:35pm

Bit of indecision from Ntlhe cross almost allows Assombalonga to slide in with touch in six-yard box.

3:34pm

City fans trying to lift their team but it's going to be a long way back.

3:31pm

Tomlin fires right-foot drive over the bar and into the grit. One of the watching workmen has to actually do something and retrieve the ball

3:28pm

Chance for City as Wells works down right side and cuts back for Jones. Either side of keeper and it's 2-1 but the shot is straight at Olejnik.

3:27pm

Should have been three as Tomlin flicks ball through for Assombalonga onside behind defence. Dinks shot over McLaughlin as the keeper clatters into him but it drops just wide.

3:25pm

ASSOMBALONGA shows quick feet to turn and shoot into the bottom corner. Another great finish and Peterborough are 2-0 up.

3:24pm

City in real trouble now!

3:22pm

Becoming standard practice for City to go a goal down

3:21pm

Nobody saw that coming, least of all a stunned Jon McLaughlin

3:20pm

1-0 to Peterborough! Tomlin's corner is cleared by Jones but NTLHE thunders it back with interest from 35 yards.

3:18pm

Another corner for Peterborough after a fast break.

3:18pm

Good cross from Yeates but wind catches it and it flies past intended target Meredith. The full back goes down in a comedy heap to the delight of the home crowd.

3:16pm

Olejnik gets in a total mess misjudging header on the edge of his penalty area. Wells is ready to pounce but referee awards Posh keeper a very soft free-kick.

3:15pm

Away fans have had to pay £28 to watch this!

3:14pm

Awkward low cross from Ntlhe gathered safely by McLaughlin at near post.

3:13pm

Blustery wind not helping the flow of the game

3:12pm

The stand behind the goal isn't going to get built when the only two workmen are stood on the mound of earth watching the game....

3:10pm

First shot in anger as Tomlin drags 20-yarder wide.

3:10pm

Wells looking hungry, trying to link up with Thompson.

3:10pm

Nothing much of note so far. City settling into their new shape

3:06pm

Full back has chance to cross but ball runs away from him and opportunity gone

3:06pm

Darby long throw into the Posh box.

3:06pm

For anyone still querying the formation, it is definitely three centre halves

3:03pm

3:03pm

Nice skills from Wells and one-two with Jones gives him room to cross. Thompson goes for the acrobatic overhead kick but fails to make contact

3:02pm

Early pressure from Posh and a shout for handball. Corner for the home side

3:02pm

And we're off with City getting the game underway

2:59pm

City will be defending the mound of grit first half.

2:58pm

Here come the two teams, led out by a mascot in a festive White Rabbit costume...

2:51pm

2:47pm

That's great.... block of schoolkids right in front of the press box

2:36pm

Yeates making his first start for nine weeks. Nice bit of symmetry that his last one was October 19 - same day Taylor played his last 90 minutes of his loan at Colchester.

2:35pm

2:35pm

2:35pm

2:34pm

Peterborough name the same side that beat Peter Taylor's Gillingham last week.

PETERBOROUGH: Olejnik, Little, Brisley, Bostwick, Ntlhe, McCann, Anderson, Newell, Tomlin, Jeffers, Assombalonga. Subs: Swanson, Payne, Mendez-Laing, Knight-Percival, Ephraim, Barnett, Day.

2:33pm

Parkinson has done his homework and says this is a system that has worked well against Peterborough for other clubs. We await with interest...

2:21pm

City make two changes - one of them enforced with James Hanson ruled out with a tight calf.

He is replaced by Mark Yeates, with Garry Thompson reverting to a strike role alongside Nahki Wells.

The other change is for a change of formation as Kyel Reid makes way for defender Matt Taylor, making his first league start for the club.

Phil Parkinson has done his homework on Peterborough's diamond midfield set-up and has switched to a three centre-half system that has worked well against it previously.

Taylor joins Rory McArdle and Matthew Bates at the back - and all have experience of playing a back three before.

Stephen Darby and James Meredith will be the wingbacks with Nathan Doyle sitting deep in midfield to man-mark the dangerous Lee Tomlin in his floating role for Posh.

CITY: McLaughlin, Darby, McArdle, Taylor, Bates, Meredith, Doyle, Jones, Yeates, Wells, Thompson. Subs: Oliver, Reid, Kennedy, Gray, McHugh, Connell, Ripley.

2:18pm

Very interesting team news from City.

2:03pm

Nice mound of grit behind one goal. London Road has that three-sided look like Oldham's Boundary Park

2:01pm

Still waiting on the team sheets here but goalkeepers gone out to warm-up

1:47pm

1:40pm

1:39pm

Good afternoon and welcome from a blustery London Road as City take on fifth-placed Peterborough.

The Bantams have never managed a victory here in 13 previous visits. Could it be 14th lucky in their first trip back since 2007?

To be honest, I felt for 'PP' when he said he 'was going to shuffle his pack' for the festive games because to me, he just doesn't have the strength in depth to confidently promote fringe players into the 1st team.

Which means he either has to try and bring in some decent squad fringe players on loan (would they come to be on the bench?) or fully signed ones (have we the money to spend? Would they come to sit on the bench?)

It's a conundrum alright but, if we take away any pretensions this year to promotion, overall so far it hasn't been a bad season so far. Whatever, I think if City fail to beat 'The Millers' on Boxing Day, 'promotion in 2014' could be a step too far, anyway.

I kind of agree. We have a good midfield but it's not very mobile, and we have a striking partnership that is one dimensional but has served reasonably well. Imo this has led to over reliance on long ball tactics. To change it would need a radical action. And I don't think we don't have the personnel to do it. I would be happy to consolidate our position in this league and push on next.

On another tack, I saw the 16 minute fans' mobile movie re: City getting promoted at the Media Musuem yesterday. It was really a little 'gem' and all supporters should try to see it. To be honest, there weren't that many at the 'Pictureville' showing which was a pity, I though,t but then I suppose a lot would have been heading for the match v the 'Posh!!'

Keep Wells and try and sign Dean Furman from Doncaster, yes it's a big ask, I love Gary Jones but he can't go on for ever, Deano would be a superb fella to have and it would prolong Gary's BCFC playing career...., everyone needs to keep calm and keep believing, I'd have snapped anyones hand off if offered our present position after 21 games at the start of the season.

Merry Christmas to all.

*
Waited until today to assess the match. My Son correctly forecasted a 2-1 defeat.*
*
Referee -Russell had been " Spot-Fixed ". I am totally convinced. Both he and his Assistants were justifiably ' BOOOED!!' off the pitch.
*
THREE bookable offenses in the second half (Yellow-Cautions ) were not administered by Russell. However, he issued one Caution in the first half to Peterborough. Then after the THREE serious fouls on Gray and Reid. He then Cautioned McArdle for a tackle to win the ball-, which he had legally challenged for,and won the ball.. This was a complete nonsense, after not booking the Peterborough players --THREE TIMES!!!. It lead me to believe that he had been 'fixed' to issue just one Caution to each side.
*
The foul on Gray , as he went to receive a cleared ball from out of City's defence, was almost worthy of a RED Card. It was Bostwick or Zakuani Who charged straight into the back of Gray. Flooring him face down into the pitch. NO CARD WAS ISSUED.???.
The fouls on Reid were constant,as usual, two Peterborough defenders did every thing to stop him.
One foul-- was to push Reid with both clenched fists, into his back. Knocking him over the touch line. NO YELLOW CARD.???
*
The BRADFORD ARMY were incensed, as were the City Management by the bench.
*
The Referee -Russell was by now a complete and suspicious joke. I feel he had been " Nobbled "!. I hope 'Parky ' & The Referees assessor, put in TRUE Reports on his terrible, and blatant mis-handling, of obvious fouls etc.
*
As to the play. City were on the back foot most of the first half. The 'Coloured' players of Peterborough, were fast slick and very strong. Their two Central defenders --BOSTWICK & ZAKUANI muscled out Thomson and Wells--with clever simple fouling- consummate ease.
Wells poor body strength was no match for the way they played him out of the game. Thomson looks to be overweight , and was no match for their defenders. He was 'No Foil ' for Wells.(Like Hanson is.)
*
The Peterborough first goal was a 35 yard 'SCREAMER', and wind assisted from behind the player. In the second half, when the wind should have assisted City, it changed to blow across the pitch. The SCREAMER was a pot-shot at the target, that could have gone anywhere, in its wind assisted flight. I feel it was a great deal lucky.
*
Peterborough's second goal, scored by ASSOMBALONGA was quality. Fast and quick feet, to cross into the 'D'Area, and slot the ball low into the corner of the target. This Player must be a Target for a Premier Club. His quality ,skill, size and abilities, left City's defence in tatters. Although he did make a couple of glaring misses in the second half.
*
Wells--because of his light physique --was easily muscled off the ball by their central defenders--Bostwick ( Muscular 6 Footer). & Zakuani.
It further exposes Wells weakness, against that type of BIG defender.
*
Connell-Gray and Wells, should have been brought in at the start of the second half. Switching to 4-3-3. There was an obvious lack of City players in Peterborough's Box area--when City were attacking in the first half; and at the beginning of the second. Perhaps a 3-4-3 formation was needed to attack the target--especially after Grays' goal.
*
I think there was a great attendance from the ' Bradford Army' . Despite the old wooden seated stand, with its supporting pillars, blocking the view.
I estimate 1500 to 2000 City supporters. Who were in fine voice, until Peterborough's screamer goal. I think we were all stunned --no shocked, by the chance shot. The chanting and singing stopped abruptly.
*
I felt City nearly did enough in the second half , to earn a draw. But --AGAIN!!!--they were playing a very good Team -AND THE REFEREE!!!!.
*

Bradford1903 says...

Certainly no disgrace to lose to a side like Peterbro', but by changing the formation, it appeared to be a case of worrying more about the opposition, rather than concentrating on our own attributes, which was the hallmark of the early part of Parky's reign when we struggled.

When Thompson has had the opportunities up front, he hasn't really impressed, and while he might win plenty of headers againgst the smaller full back when playing on the right, but when he is up against two imposing centre halves they appear to bully him out of the game. If Hanson is not fit, it would be Gray or Folan for me.

Massive game against Rotherham now, lose that and we will be 8 points adrift of 6th place, which is a big deficit to make up even at this early stage, although you feel nothing is impossible after last season.

Let's just concentrate on what we do and don't worry too much about the opposition, because when we have employed this negative approach, it has seldom worked under Parky, and Peterbro' were also on a poor run.

Let's not forget what got us in this division in the first place, playing two out and out wingers, and taking the game to the opposition.
Bradford1903
