Cleckheaton pair Olivia Hamilton and Megan Clarke tipped for top
Warren Lockett believes Cleckheaton members Olivia Hamilton and Megan Clarke can go on to compete at the top level after they were named in one of ten England under-16 regional coaching squads for 2014.
The 14-year-old pair are among eight girls picked for the Yorkshire group, which also includes Skipton’s Milly Eaton, and will work under new coach Andy Nicholson in preparation for next season.
Both have been involved in the national coaching set-up for several years and were part of the senior Yorkshire ladies squad that won the county finals crown in the summer.
Cleckheaton professional Lockett, who has witnessed the duo’s rapid development since they took the game up, said: “They are both doing great. For two young girls to be thought of as strong enough to make the full county squad is brilliant.
“They have the potential to be full-time players and look at turning professional.”
Despite their young age, Lockett expects the duo to enter more senior competitions as their games progress next year.
He said: “They will probably look at varying their schedules.
“They have a few years as junior golfers left but because they are advancing so much they might look to play in more open-age categories, like the English Ladies Championship.
“Megan entered the northern ladies championship and was the youngest player to qualify for the matchplay stages.”
England Golf’s performance director Nigel Edwards said: “We aim to give our talented young players the best golf development experience available.
“In return, we expect the players to commit themselves to a programme of golf coaching and physical training that will set them up for life.”
