Record-breaker Alicia in power surge
6:50am Wednesday 30th October 2013 in Sport
Emmanuel College student Alicia Blum has become the British Classic sub-junior powerlifting champion.
The 15-year-old from Thackley, who only took up the sport six months ago, qualified for the British Classic event after achieving a Yorkshire and North East division squat record of 76.5kg, with a total lift of 201.5kg.
She then beat that record in the Classic, squatting 77.5kg.
Alicia also smashed the deadlift record with a 102.5kg lift as well as the overall record with a 217.5kg combined lift.
Alicia’s dad and coach, Mick, told of his pride.
He said: “I’m delighted with what she’s achieved in such a short space of time.
“She’s taken to it all like a duck to water. I’m so proud.
“Powerlifting and bodybuilding is something that I’ve been involved in for quite a long time so it’s something that she has been brought up with.
“But I’ve never forced her to do it. It’s something she chooses to do and I don’t have to push her because she really does enjoy herself.”
