PRESTON 2 CITY 2
Rory McArdle’s first goal since the opening day grabbed City a well-earned point in a thrilling Roses clash at Preston.
The Northern Ireland international nodded home a Gary Jones corner for the fourth header of the night in front of a delirious near-3,000 strong away end.
James Hanson had given City the perfect start when he nodded in a cross by Raffaele De Vita, who was making his first league start in place of Mark Yeates.
Kyel Reid, who had an outstanding match, hit the post before Preston levelled through Tom Clarke.
The home side went in front midway through the second half when Bailey Wright was left totally unmarked from a corner. But McArdle hit back within five minutes - it was the least City deserved.
One more corner for Preston... comes to nothing. All over 2-2!
Headed over by Davies
Corner for Preston in final minute of added time...
Final sub for Preston as Humphrey replaced by Buchanan.
Four added minutes.
Beavon announced as sponsors' man of match. It's drowned out by chants of Reidy, Reidy.... and they are right
Now it's Reid's turn for a shot. High, high and higher it goes...
Hanson gets to the corner but nods wide
Jones with a great effort. Rudd tips away for City corner...
Rare slip from McArdle in his own box but Bates covering to whack away
Who created the offside rule? They should be shot :( #bcafc— @susiebantam 22 October 2013
Reid being treated by Matt Barrass
Come on City"!! Clinch the winner!! #bcafc— @paparoster 22 October 2013
Still down on the floor as City try to play on. Now ref going over
And he's been flattened again....
Reid toying with Preston again..
Preston make second sub as Hume comes on for Beavon.
Hanson heads home from Jones kick.... but the assistant's flag up for offside. City celebrations cut short
Free-kick for City in good position
And here's that change...
Folan ready to come on now. Expect it for Thompson
Wouldn't want to predict the outcome here. Could go any way
De Vita replaced by Kennedy.
Former City loanee Lee Holmes on for Brownhill, 76min
You're not singing any more is the chant. Guess which end???!!
It's 2-2! Jones corner is met by firm header by Rory McARDLE....
Corner for the visitors and the volume kicks up.
Jones hacks it away but Preston press again as Laird curls into the crowd.
Corner number six for Preston. Mark up this time ....
Laird's corner picks out WRIGHT completely unmarked and his header beats Jones and goes in off the far post. 2-1 to Preston
And another corner... and another Preston goal!
2,910 City fans in a crowd of 11,485
Corner for Preston.
Darby slips Reid through on right, he cuts inside and unleashes..... just past the far post
Jones flies down the wing like a man 15 years younger but is eventually smothered by numbers by the Preston box.
Of course he's not the youngest player out there - Kevin Davies is three months older
Up to the other end where Beavon fires over with angled effort.
Hanson climbs well to meet Meredith cross but cannot get any direction on it.
Reid been dumped on the floor again. Just as well the pitch is in such pristine nick, he's been left on it often enough tonight.
Reid pulled up for a very soft foul on Laird to end little attacking spell from City. Think the crowd won that one
Once again Jonny Mac makes a key save in a game
Great save from McLaughlin to deny Humphrey. Beavon drills cross along six-yard box where Davies misses it. Falls to Humphrey who thumps it back from tight angle and the City keeper does superbly to turn over the bar.
Loud shouts from the home fans for a penalty against Bates. Referee David Coote says "no".
Humphrey drives in cross which Davies tries to turn goalwards. The ball flicks off McArdle and doesn't miss by much.
Reid backheel takes out Preston defence and Meredith drills in low cross which De Vita fires across goal. Good chance for City and the fans are off again...
Reid clearance flicked on by Hanson and Thompson controls well to drive forward. Fashions room for a shot but it has no power
City bit fortunate to get away with leaving Laird unmarked to cross into box. McArdle does well under pressure to win the header.
Reid will tear you apart again is the anthem at Preston's backs as they restart the action. Let's hope so!
Here they are...
Preston first to emerge for the second half. "Bring on the Bradford" sings half of Bradford from behind their goal...
The big question is!!! Will Preston NE finish the game with 11 men ??@ParkerTandA @TimThornton3 #bcafc Reid has torn them apart!!!— @RobinLuscombe 22 October 2013
Pity no Nahki Wells again tonight - this game is really made for him.
Good start and finish to the half from city, disappointing goal to concede! Tommo not involved at all! Reidy looking biggest threat #bcafc— @jcwheeler 22 October 2013
Reid, Reid will tear you apart again........and again and again and again #bcafc #pnefc— @beardallhort 22 October 2013
The City fans are out in force
Hanson celebrates his early goal
James Hanson scores the opener for City
Few ole's as City play keep ball and that's half-time, 1-1
Jones and Doyle having to work hard against Preston's midfield three. Doing all right so far
Another chance for Reid to run at Preston defence but he's crowded out and crosses tamely straight into Rudd's hands.
Three added minutes.
Jones makes the tackle of the night to halt Humphrey outside the City box. Felt the shudder up here - and we're in the back row!
Another foul on Reid, who's the pantomime villain at the moment, and Keane gets a ticking off from the ref.
Reid blocked out but still forces second corner.
City win their first corner. Reid trots over to take it and is roundly booed by home end - presumably for falling over when fouled...
The curse of the ex player. Tom Clarke #bcafc #pnefc— @Albertstan 22 October 2013
And finally the home fans make some noise...
Reid free-kick from near the corner flag is almost headed back to the corner flag by Hanson.
And it's 1-1 all of a sudden. Wright free-kick to the far post and CLARKE nods home. Not the best defending of a setpiece.
Reid chopped down again and it's another Preston yellow for Wright.
Talk of the devil. Davies holds off McArdle to win header but it's straight at McLaughlin.
Tidy control from De Vita on the edge of the Preston box before Clarke finishes it with a no-nonsense tackle.
No impact from Davies as yet. Once sold for £7.5 mill........
Rory McArdle gets a shove from Davies - and a loud song from the supporters for winning the foul...
Reid over-runs the ball ploughing down the middle but gets brought down by a clumsy lunge from Welsh. The Preston skipper's in the book for that.
Poor keeping from Rudd but that was so close to a City second.
Now it's Reid's turn to have a run on the right. He shoots - and hits the post!
Humphrey on the ball again and cuts inside with a shot that's wild and well wide. Shades of Omar there...
Chris Humphrey looks an early threat on Preston right. Stuart McCall used to rave about him at Motherwell - and he kept Omar Daley out the team...
Come on city! Great start lads #BCAFC— @nathanevanss94 22 October 2013
Welsh corner confidently taken by McLaughlin despite a friendly nudge from Davies.
Important clearing header from Darby concedes first corner of game as Beavon waits to pounce.
If it wasn't for the drum/man banging a board with a mallet you wouldn't be able to hear the #PNEFC fans #bcafc— @Ianhirst666 22 October 2013
Sounds like we are letting them back into it #bcafc— @DavidJudson 22 October 2013
Decent shot on the turn from Beavon flies narrowly over angle of post and bar.
Thompson bursts into the box but handles as he tries to bring bouncing ball under control.
Few pleasantries being sung about Leeds at the moment. City fans enjoying their away day so far - but long way to go
Big shout for a City corner, particularly from the masses up the other end of the pitch.... goalkick given.
Free-kick for City level with penalty area. Reid cross headed out by Huntington.
Davies moaning not to get a foul. McArdle stays switched on to make important clearance from own six-yard box.
McLaughlin out confidently to take a hanging cross. Quick throw-out to release De Vita but he gives away possession and chance to break has gone.
That's Hanson's sixth goal of the season - and City's first since his last one at Walsall.
But City have scored now! De Vita's deep cross from the right and HANSON downward header at far post bounces past Rudd in the Preston net....
Long clearance from McLaughlin drops at Hanson feet but his shot is superbly blocked by sliding Clarke.
City fans in magnificent voice. Absolutely booming out....
RT @ParkerTandA: A few #bcafc here now ..... http://t.co/0JJGZy3hiO— @Rickwoollin 22 October 2013
Early shot from Laird but it's too wide to worry McLaughlin.
And we're off with City defending their own fans...
And here come both teams as the volume booms from the City end...
AC/DC on the PA system but getting drowned out by Midland Road...
Come on city !!!! All the way from Portugal #bcafc— @matty_parsons 22 October 2013
First chorus of Parkinson's Bradford Army as the players go back into the dressing room for a last pre-match pep talk from the gaffer.
Mighty roar from the away end, which is filling nicely as the fans start to stream in.
Talking history, this is of course Phil Parkinson's 100th league game in charge of City. That's if you don't include the play-offs - which I don't because it was effectively a different competition.
Thorsten Stuckmann, the Preston back-up keeper, was the one that Peter Jackson wanted to sign when City were at Leeds in 2011.
Suddenly found himself without a keeper because Liverpool wouldn't let Martin Hansen be cup-tied.
But the FA wouldn't let him sign for just one game so they got Oscar Jansson instead from Tottenham.
Can't beat midweek away games. Come on city!! 3 points tonight #bcafc— @jimwalshaw 22 October 2013
Lots of gaps in the away end at the moment. Hearing the traffic going into Preston is gridlocked...
Preston have one former City loanee on the pitch and another on the bench tonight.
Tom Clarke, who had a brief spell at Valley Parade under Stuart McCall in 2008, is one of their three defenders.
And Lee Holmes, the winger who was involved in the first half of the 2006-07 campaign, is among the home subs.
City's centre halves can expect a very physical night against Kevin Davies.
PRESTON: Rudd, Clarke, Huntington, Wright, Humphrey, Welsh, Keane, Laird, Brownhill, Beavon, Davies. Subs: Holmes, Byrom, Garner, Buchanan, Mousinho, Hume, Stuckmann.
Good view at #deepdale #pne come on you bantams #ctid #bcafc http://t.co/1BpDqo80so— @AaaDee9 22 October 2013
Raffaele De Vita makes his first league start for City tonight after ten appearances from the bench.
The Italian comes in for Mark Yeates - the only change from the team that paid the price for squandering chances at Crawley on Saturday.
But De Vita will play on the right of midfield with Garry Thompson - the guilty party with two of those scoring opportunities - partnering James Hanson in attack.
Matt Taylor, back from his Colchester loan spell, replaces Luke Oliver on the bench.
CITY: McLaughlin, Darby, McArdle, Bates, Meredith, De Vita, Jones, Doyle, Reid, Thompson, Hanson. Subs: Connell, Yeates, Folan, McHugh, Taylor, Kennedy, Ripley.
RT @ParkerTandA: Expect a fair few in there later ... #bcafc http://t.co/loZtX9x4eO— @KevNewy13 22 October 2013
Good evening and welcome from Deepdale for this eagerly-anticipated Roses clash with Preston.
