CRAWLEY 1 CITY 0
Former City trainee Emile Sinclair stung his old club with the only goal as the Bantams lost for the second week running.
The first half was an open affair with both sides having chances – City’s best both falling to Garry Thompson.
The best came to him six yards out after Mark Yeates’ pass appeared to strike Kyle McFadzean on the hand. That may have put off the winger whose close-range finish cleared the bar.
Then Thompson gambled when James Meredith headed deep back into the box from a cleared City corner but his lob over keeper Paul Jones landed on the roof of the net.
Jon McLaughlin twice saved from Jamie Proctor and Crawley got stronger as the half wore on.
Nicky Adams looked to have given them the lead after 36 minutes but his goal-bound shot deflected off debutant defender Matt Bates and just past the post.
But Crawley struck eight minutes into the second half. Andy Drury’s pass opened up the visitors and Sinclair confidently beat McLaughlin.
They should have scored again when McLaughlin’s throw-out to an unsuspecting Bates was picked off by Mike Jones but he could not hit the target.
A superb save from Jones prevented Reid from equalising but Crawley had further chances to add to their tally.
In a late flurry, Gary Jones had a late effort blocked by his namesake Mike and Rory McArdle's header was stopped on the line but City came up empty-handed.
And that's the final whistle. City beaten for second game running
Crawley kill more time as Adams subbed by Essam.
McArdle flick near post blocked on the line by Jones. Nearly a repeat of his Bristol City goal...
Corner number eight for the visitors...
Minimum of four minutes added.
City corner again as pressure mounts. Hanson hooks leg round ball but cannot direct shot.
Proctor replaced by Connolly.
Great block from Jones to deny Jones. Crawley's Mike throws himself in the way of City's skipper. Nearly a late leveller there...
Four minutes to go as City level the corner count at 6-6. Too high for everyone and Reid cross headed away from near post.
Another Crawley corner as McArdle clears Adams cross but City ride the storm.
Cracking effort by Hanson to control and volley from angle of box but shot pings over bar.
Hanson gets a finger in the eye but game goes on and Folan is furious as he is pulled up for foul on Walsh.
Folan tries to get in behind Crawley but keeper Jones is positive and slides on to loose ball.
Crawley make their first substitution as goalscorer Sinclair goes off to standing ovation. Alexander - who scored against City for Wimbledon last season - comes on
City gone to three at the back.
And one more sub. It's Connell for Bates
Sinclair cross-shot turned away by McLaughlin.
Second City sub, De Vita makes his standard cameo in place of Thompson. 71mins
That's a surprise.... Ian Goodison has been sent off for Tranmere
Crowd is 3,836 with 746 from West Yorkshire - great effort
Great shot from Reid and even better save from Jones to push it over the bar....
McLaughlin gets his angles bang on to block Proctor shot. Crawley threatening to add to their tally.
Now Yeates subbed by Folan. Or Caleb F-Laaan as the announcer calls him.
Yeates one-on-one with keeper but ref pulls play back for Bulman clattering Reid on halfway line.
Parky angry he stopped play but looks like Yeates was offside anyway.
City almost gift Crawley a second. McLaughlin throws ball out to Bates, who wasn't expecting it and Proctor picks up possession. Should have hit target but shot touched wide.
We really really miss key players. Really dis joints us #bcafc Come on city.— @bigbobbycampbel 19 October 2013
Folan taking his training top off as City get ready to make first change.
Just heard the hub had a great chance come on the boys! #bcafc #believe— @chelsy_x 19 October 2013
City chasing shadows for a while as Crawley stroke the ball about. Ends with tackle by Bates
Inviting bouncing cross from Reid leaves keeper in two minds but nobody gambling to get in there.
Yeates wriggles way into the box but Sadler makes no-nonsense challenge.
Crawley pushing forward again and Adams tests McLaughlin from 20 yards.
More life about the home crowd now but City looking for a quick response.
Good pass, good finish but City will be annoyed to be opened up like that.
Crawley break the deadlock. Druru's through ball opens up City and SINCLAIR slides shot past McLaughlin.
The game is 49 minutes old and finally we have a "Come on Crawley" chant. It lasts all of ten seconds
Very good tackle from McFadzean to thwart Yeates on edge of Crawley penalty area.
Flat corner helped on by Thompson. Jones keeps ball alive and then falls over as he tries to cross....
Yeates free-kick into the mix headed behind for a City corner in front of their fans as the drum starts up.
No changes at the break as City restart the action.
And that's half-time, 0-0.
One added minute.
We need another ball ... Not for the first time a clearance disappears into the Sussex countryside.
Sinclair chests Sadler cross back for Jones to have crack from edge of the City box but his sidefoot whizzes wide.
Free-kick for home side 25 yards out. Sadler floats it in and McArdle, not for the first time, makes the clearance.
Crawley enjoying more of the ball at the moment. City seem to be taking bit of a breather
Reid responds in similar vein but his cross is blocked and comes back off him for goal kick
Strong run from McFadzean threatens to open up the visitors.
Crawley's movement when they attack keeping City on their toes
Not sure how much the new boy knew about that but he got plenty of pats on the back from his team-mates.
Crawley pressure and Bates makes goal-saving block. Simpson pulls ball back for Adams whose shot looks to be heading for corner of net but defender's deflection saves the day.
Again Jones catches from Yeates. Opportunity wasted
Darby cross blocked off and spins for City's second corner.
Yeates puts far too much on it and Jones makes a simple take.
Away end warms up as City win free-kick 35 yards out.
It's a bit quiet here - heard nothing from the locals.
Meredith looks to play Reid in but Bulman slides to nick the ball off the winger in corner of box.
Some neat build-up from home side ends with wild whack by Adams that flies high out of the ground.
McArdle in right place to thwart Sinclair then Proctor crowded out by numbers in City box.
Need to start taking these chances😁 #bcafc— @bantamsmatt 19 October 2013
Oh dear tommo #bcafc— @RyanKehoe 19 October 2013
McArdle jumps but misses.... ball headed back into the box by Meredith, Thompson gambled on it but couldn't keep the lob down and it lands on top of net. City close again.
Dangerous cross from Jones flicked behind by Bullman to give City first corner.
McLaughlin comes a long way from his goal to clear - and does over the stand and the road behind it....
Meanwhile neat control and shimmy from Proctor opens up space for angled shot which McLaughlin blocks for a third Crawley corner.
Yeates looking a menace for City but they need to focus more in the box and make these opportunities count.
#bcafc seem to be missing chances for fun here. Need to take one soon.— @KeithWildman 19 October 2013
Clever play from Yeates again to stroke ball into Hanson's path. Striker unable to get anything on sidefoot - any touch would probably have taken it past Jones in Crawley goal.
Chance at other end as Proctor shakes off McArdle in City box but his finish is tame and straight at McLaughlin.
What a miss from Thompson! Yeates cross hits McFadzean on the hand and ball rolls through for Thompson six yards out - if that - and he skies over bar. Should be 1-0 to City
Pitch is not great, bit bobbly in places.
Yeates tracks back well to dispossess Adams
Best move so far. Reid, on the right wing, pass nodded back intelligently by Hanson and Yeates fires over bar.
The ball's a hot potato in early minutes. Neither side able to keep decent possession so far.
McLaughlin gets a hand on Drury corner but didn't look comfortable. McArdle completed the clearance
Another corner for Crawley off McArdle.
Danger ends as wild shot clears the (very small) stand.
Proctor's low shot fumbled by McLaughlin and Meredith makes important block as Drury follows up. Corner for City.
Good cross from Darby just beyond the stretching Hanson at the far post.
First rendition of Midland Road..
A lot warmer today. Even Meredith not wearing his gloves...
Crawley get game underway, kicking towards away fans.
City wearing the amber shirts today. Can't wear the usual blue away because it would clash with Crawley keeper Paul Jones.
Sad news about Geoff Smith this morning. #bcafc legend, great bowler and all round decent chap. RIP Geoff.— @MichaelOsolcock 19 October 2013
Kick off approaches and the wifi wounds down...
Hope Bates had a decent debut today. Welcome to #bcafc— @BiiGSeaN86 19 October 2013
