Call-ups could leave Bradford City short at centre-half
International calls could leave City three centre-halves down for next week’s home clash with Tranmere.
Rory McArdle is definitely missing after getting the nod in Northern Ireland’s squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Israel.
And Carl McHugh is on the standby list for the Republic of Ireland’s Euro under-21 championship double header with Romania. With Matt Taylor out on loan with Colchester that could see City’s defensive options seriously diminished for the game a week on Sunday.
An injury to Aaron Hughes has boosted McArdle’s chances of featuring for Northern Ireland after being an unused sub in last month’s losses to Portugal and Luxembourg.
McArdle missed City's win over Brentford because of that and Phil Parkinson doesn't want to lose his centre half again for nothing.
He said: “It’s frustrating. You never want to stop someone being called up but equally I hope he gets some game time.
“It’s different for the players in the Championship and Premier League because they’re not missing their own fixtures. But Rory wants to play every week.
“You’d never not want to play for your country but he’s been away twice now and not set foot on the pitch.
“I see players pulling out of those squads and often wonder how bad their injuries are. There seem to be an awful lot who pull out if it’s not a glamour type of trip and that can be frustrating for us.
“But it’s great for McArdle and his form’s been good. He obviously missed last week because of an illness but he’s good enough to play at that level.”
