Catch details for week ending September 29 – Day ticket: Fewston 24, Swinsty 3. Total fish caught: Fewston 94, Swinsty 6. Average per rod: Fewston 3.9, Swinsty 2.0. The heaviest fish caught was a 4lb 8oz rainbow trout by Tom Thackwray using bloodworm. Fewston: Water level now very low making previously unfished areas accessible. Trout sitting in deeper water on cold mornings requiring intermediate line and wet fly for successful anglers. Swinsty: Trout taking worm in deep water. Thruscross: By the time you read this that’s another brown trout season over. Catch details for the month ending September 29 – Day ticket: Fewston 104, Swinsty 13, Thruscross (catch and return) 6. Total fish caught: Fewston 435, Swinsty 33, Thruscross 35. Average per rod: Fewston 4.2, Swinsty 2.5, Thruscross 5.8. The heaviest fish caught was a 5lb rainbow trout by Richard Atkinson using daddy long leggs. Fewston: Fishing consistently well with traditional wet fly having great success. Lower water level is helping with access. Swinsty: A dedicated few anglers fishing with ledgered worm pulling trout, as spinners take the perch. Thruscross: A steady end to the season has seen lots of fish feeding, just very difficult to catch.

Andy Miller won the final round of this year’s Calder League with 22lb 4oz of grayling from Gravel Pits. Dave Pitt caught 18lb 9oz from Lillands for second, followed by Keith Hobson with 15lb 14oz. Mirfield were the winning team on the day and Ultimate Barnsley won the series with a total of 32½ points. Craig Turbitt won the aggregate weight for the series with 85lbs 13oz, closely followed by Andy Miller with 82lb 5oz. Tickets are still available for the final members’ match of the year at Cowthorpe on Sunday from Simon on 01274-571175. The annual meeting is to be held on Wednesday at the Moorlands Club, Cleckheaton. Seats must be taken by 7.30pm and members are reminded entry is on production of a 2013 yearbook. Shelf Dam is fishing well for mixed nets of bream, chub, roach and ide.

Our next general meeting will be on Tuesday, October 15 in the New Inn, East Bierley, commencing at 8pm. Anglers who would like to join us will be made most welcome. We have a couple of trips coming up. One is to Whitby on November 6 and 7. The other is to Liverpool bay on December 14. These are inshore trips. If anyone wishes to go on any of the trips, telephone Dave on 07711-987833 to book your place. He will be happy to advise on tackle and bait.
Wind and floating weed made fishing difficult in the Ian Smith Memorial Open match in the canal at Armley. There were 25 competitors and the winner was R Thorne with a catch of roach weighing 4lb 4oz, 2 R Vowles 4lb, 3 R Movley 3lb 8oz, 4 G Colbran 2lb 10½oz. Proceeds went to the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research. For Sunday’s members’ match at Pilley’s the gate will be open at 8.30am with the draw at 8.45am. The following Sunday is the match on the Ouse at Hunters Lodge, with the final Saturday canal open at Rodley on October 19.
Result of match fished on September 28 at Aston Park (18 fished): 1 Derek Milner 57lb 8oz, 2 Steff Armitage 40lb, 3 Alan Flesher 37lb 12oz. Section winners were Dean Clarkson, Kevin Armitage and Graham Hall. The final match of this year’s calendar is at Langwith on Bethany’s Lake on October 20. To book on contact Jason or Bernard. Eldwick reservoir is now open for coarse fishing but will be closed on Sunday for a club match, draw 9am on the bank. To book on telephone Tony on 07971-428678. The canal is still producing good nets of small fish at Crossflatts, with larger fish below the three rise locks.

The small lake at Staveley will be closed on Saturday for an open match. There is currently one golden peg worth £100 and a silver peg worth £50. Tickets £15 all in and are available from the match secretary on 07875-275749 or 01423-523368. Shipton Lake and Oakworth Ponds are producing good quality nets and are well worth a visit. The River Ure at Boroughbridge and Lower Dunsforth are also fishing well.
