Bradford Park Avenue boss Deacey hoping practice makes perfect after midweek friendly
Bradford boss John Deacey will be hoping to escape the curse of the manager of the month tomorrow when Avenue head to Solihull Moors.
Deacey picked up the Skrill North accolade for September after leading his side to four league victories, one draw and a win in the FA Cup second qualifying round.
Five wins and no defeats from the six games in the month not only landed the manager the award but also vastly improved the club’s league position.
After failing to land a single victory in the opening month of the campaign, Avenue were a lowly 18th with three points from five matches.
Tomorrow they head to high-flying Solihull looking for an away win which would see them move level on points with their hosts, who sit in the top five.
Following last Saturday’s win at Guiseley in the FA Cup, Deacey decided to mix this week’s training with a full practice match.
He said: “We had a free midweek (no league game), which was good for us because we needed that break. But instead of just training I wanted to arrange a friendly against a local side.
“Because we have been on a decent run the team has been settled so we have a few people who have spent a lot of time on the bench. There are also players who are coming back from injury and haven’t featured for a while.
“Playing a game is better for them than two or three training sessions. It is match sharpness they need not fitness because they have been doing all the work with the rest of the squad.”
The top five in the table are separated by just three points so it could be a significant weekend at the top end of the Conference North as the first quarter of the season draws to an end.
