Old Mods inflict first defeat on Grangefield
5:20pm Monday 30th September 2013 in Sport
Grangefield dropped to second place in the Senior A division of the Yorkshire Amateur League after losing for the first time this season.
A disciplined display from Old Modernians saw them race into a 3-0 lead after 30 minutes, with Ben Bowman netting and Johnny Hick taking full advantage of two headed back-passes that fell short. Grangefield scored from a speculative 62nd-minute shot as the score finished 3-1.
Farsley led 3-0 at the interval but injuries to key midfielders Andy Cooper and Craig Farrand meant a more even second period.
Celtic managed to add a fourth to ensure smooth progress to the first round, where they will host Beeston St Anthony’s. Sam Bradley (2), Luke Gordon and Adam Jesusco were the goalscorers.
Jordan Webster hit a hat-trick as Heckmondwike GSOB marched on in the cup with a 4-1 win over North Leeds. Ryan Laidlaw also scored, with Heckmondwike travelling to Garforth Rangers in the next round.
St Bedes won a thrilling tie against Morley Town 5-4 after extra-time. The score finished 3-3 after an all-action and at times feisty 90 minutes, with Bedes’ goals coming from a Chris Gauci penalty, John White and Lee Cornforth.
Cornforth punished a defensive slip to sweetly strike home in the first minute of extra-time and, after Morley levelled matters in the 94th minute, Stephen Drake clinched it for Bedes, who are home to fellow Senior B outfit Rodillian in the first round.
