Solid victory for patient Cleckheaton
Sheffield 7, Cleckheaton 18
Cleckheaton continued their unbeaten start to the SSE North One East season with a deserved win at Sheffield.
In the sixth minute, Cleckheaton appeared to have opened the scoring with a Richard Piper try but the referee inexplicably disallowed the score as he was apparently unsighted.
Undeterred, the visitors gradually increased the pressure but two Ross Hayden penalties were the only scores of a rather disjointed first half.
Cleckheaton's Jack Bickerdike went over for the game's first try in the 56th minute, which was unconverted, but Sheffield replied with a try from winger Ben Shore, converted by Rob Holland.
The game was finally sewn up when skipper Piper scored a well-constructed try wide out which was converted by Hayden.
This was a solid Cleckheaton performance without being convincing, with the pack rather subdued relative to their recent high standards.
