Top dogs Thackley facing biggest test of season
Thackley reclaimed top spot in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League during the week but will be hard pressed to keep it as they host Bridlington Town on Saturday.
Brid have had a surprisingly poor start to the Premier Division campaign and trail their hosts by five points after nine games. Both clubs have games in hand on many of their top-six rivals but this will be arguably the Dennyboys’ biggest test so far.
They go into it on the back of a midweek victory (2-1 over Basford United) but it was an unconvincing win in which they left it late snatch the points.
Albion Sports also face a tough fixture as they head to third-placed Retford United, who could be at the summit by Saturday evening. If Retford win while Thackley and second-placed Tadcaster Albion lose, they would go top on goal difference.
Kulwinder Sandhu’s eighth-placed Albion side will be keen to ensure that does not happen as they look to get their own promotion push back on track.
Albion drew 1-1 at home to Tadcaster on Wednesday, a result which ended a run of three defeats that started with their only loss in the league – at home to Thackley – and was followed by exits from the FA Cup and FA Vase.
Pickering Town at home to Liversedge has all the allure of a mid-table clash even at this early stage of the campaign.
Sedge would join their 11th-placed hosts on 14 points with a victory but would not leapfrog them unless they won by a 26-goal margin, such is the current gap in goal difference.
Eccleshill United will still be licking their wounds following a damaging midweek defeat as they travel to mid-table Pontefract Collieries in Division One.
The Eagles will need to bounce back from a 2-0 home defeat to leaders Shaw Lane Aquaforce which saw Lee Duxbury’s side drop from second to third.
Eccleshill go into this weekend five points off top spot but have a game in hand on both the clubs above them, so a three-point maximum in Pontefract would keep them well in touch with the leaders.
