Birkenshaw respond to red card in style
Birkenshaw 32, Morley Borough 24
Birkenshaw returned to winning ways in the Pennine League with a superb home victory over local rivals and favourites for promotion Morley Borough.
The Championship One win was even more sweet after Birkenshaw were reduced to 12 men on the 50-minute mark when Ben Kelly was dismissed for punching as he retaliated to an alleged gouging incident.
The game saw eight home players making their first appearance of the season, with some having only met their new team-mates on Thursday evening at their opening training session.
There were two tries apiece from Damien Smith, Mickey Emmott and Matty Honeysett, with Nathan Kitson kicking two goals and Emmott adding one.
There were some really encouraging signs from the Bradford side, with Neil Cherryholme marking his first game of the season by taking the man of the match award.
Emmott and Honeysett were not far behind in the voting after they also had an excellent game.
Birkenshaw’s next assignment sees them travel to Huddersfield on Saturday to take on St Joseph’s, who were relegated from the Championship last season.
