Second still big source of pride
Gary Ballance column: This week has been one of great disappointment at Yorkshire in missing out on the title, but also one of pride for how we have performed this season.
We were all very disappointed when it was confirmed that we were not able to win the league but second place is still a great effort from everyone.
I think we can look back at this campaign and hold our heads up high.
It’s been very tough because, if you think about it, we’ve had two bad games, against Sussex at the start of the season and against Durham at Scarborough.
The rest we’ve either won or had a very good chance of winning.
We’ve won seven games this season, with one more to play, and in a lot years we would have won the championship with that sort of record.
However, you have to give credit to Durham after winning ten games out of 15.
We finished our season at Headingley with a good win over Middlesex and I was pleased to sign off by scoring 90 in the second innings to help us triumph.
I knew going into that innings that I needed 95 runs to reach 1,000 championship runs for the season but my bigger focus was getting a hundred and taking the lead beyond 300.
It would have been nice to have got a ton and pass 1,000 in my final innings at Headingley but sometimes that’s the way it goes and we still have one more match this summer.
Everyone in cricket will be interested in the announcement of the England Ashes squad today, which I would obviously love to be in, but I’ve said all season that those sorts of things look after themselves.
I won’t be worrying about it. I’ve done everything I can in terms of scoring runs, although it would have been nice to have got a big hundred, but otherwise I’m pretty happy from a personal point of view.
I’m told the announcement will be made when we are travelling down south to play Surrey, so I won’t be waiting by the phone.
Hopefully, if I don’t get in the Ashes squad I might get into the performance squad going to Australia.
I had a good winter there last year with the Lions, so going back out would be another good experience for me.
