John Deacey: Repeat of Guiseley performance won't be enough for Avenue
Their midweek derby victory has put Bradford Park Avenue on a high for Saturday's Skrill North home game but they will have to be at their very best to get anything from the visit of Solihull Moors.
Avenue lost their opening two league games of the campaign but they have not been beaten since that testing first three-day period.
They hauled themselves into the top half of the table when they banked a maximum at neighbours Guiseley on Tuesday.
It was Bradford’s third win on the trot but manager John Deacey was far from pleased with his side’s display.
He knows that a repeat of that performance will not be good enough against third-placed Solihull.
The manager felt his side were fortunate to win at Nethermoor following a 44th-minute Richard Marshall penalty and on-loan Bantams striker Louie Swain’s late goal that made it 2-0.
“We were rubbish!” declared Deacey.
“I was pleased with the result but not the way we played. I said after the game that the best team hadn’t won and I stand by that. But we went there last year and should have won but lost 1-0 so it isn’t always the best team that wins.
“It (Tuesday) was probably our worst performance of the season but the win keeps our run going. We are climbing the table but we need to keep working at it.”
Unsurprisingly Deacey named an unchanged line up following their 3-1 victory at home to AFC Telford United last Saturday.
However, he could be spoilt for choice on Saturday, even though Adam Clayton and Scott Maxfield are still sidelined as they serve the last game of their three-match bans for recent red cards. Maxfield picked his up at Buxton before he signed for Avenue.
Deacey’s hand will be strengthened, however, as his son Jordan, fellow midfielder Ross Daly and defender Martin Drury are all pushing for a place in the squad after injury.
