Andrew Gale steadies Yorkshire after early losses
Andrew Gale guided Yorkshire out of early trouble on day one of their crunch County Championship match against Middlesex at Headingley.
With a victory essential to keep the pressure on Division One leaders Durham, who need 21 points from their remaining two games to claim a third title in six years, Yorkshire lost two wickets inside the first three overs after losing the toss and being put in to bat.
While Durham started impressively and bowled Nottinghamshire out for just 78 on the first morning at Chester-le-Street, Yorkshire slipped to 1-2 as Adam Lyth fell lbw in the second over to Corey Collymore and Phil Jaques edged Tim Murtagh behind.
But captain Gale (47no) joined overseas player Kane Williamson (12no) to forge a determined unbroken 62-run stand before rain halted play 15 minutes before the scheduled lunch interval.
