Danny Belcher is a big factor in Bradford Salem romp
Bradford Salem 58, Ripon 0
Bradford Salem's excellent start to the season gathered momentum with a crushing SSE Yorkshire Division Two victory over Ripon at Shay Lane.
The Bradford side were soon in the ascendancy and took a 3-0 lead courtesy of a penalty from Danny Belcher, and although he was off target with a second penalty attempt, the classy full back soon added to his tally with a try and a conversion to put his side ahead 10-0.
The lead increased to 17 points when blind-side flanker Jamie Booth cut a great angle and powered his way over line for a fine try improved by Belcher.
Salem suffered a blow when they lost second-rower Ben Scarbrough to a cut eye but had the luxury of replacing him with club skipper James Cunliffe, who could only gain a place on the bench after missing the previous game against Barnsley.
A second successful penalty from Belcher extended Salem's advantage to 20-0, and winger Carl Walker then latched on to a pin-point crosskick from fly half Andy Robinson to cross the whitewash, Belcher adding the extras to give the hosts a 27-0 advantage at the break.
Salem continued to dominate in the second half and soon increased the margin to 34 points when Booth got over for his second try from a rolling maul.
Scrum half Matt Child then exploited a gap on the blind-side to score a try, again improved by Belcher, and with a 41-point lead with 15 minutes remaining a cricket score was on the cards.
However, to their credit, Ripon did not throw in the towel and only resolute defence from Salem prevented the visitors from scoring after an intense period of pressure in their 22.
Salem went ahead 48-0 when excellent handling in the backs created an overlap on the right and replacement winger Sam Savage showed good pace to score a fine try under the posts, Belcher adding the simple conversion.
The Heaton side finished the game off in style, and after winger Sam Dunn had scored in the right corner, Belcher collected his second try to seal an emphatic 58-0 victory and take his personal tally to 28 points.
