Nicky Boshell blast lights up Bradford Park Avenue win
Bradford Park Avenue 3, AFC Telford United 1
A sublime piece of skill which led to the goal that saw Bradford Park Avenue take the lead was the lasting memory of an entertaining Skrill Conference North Division clash.
Avenue had clawed their way back into a game they should never have been behind in but more than an hour had passed before Nicky Boshell illuminated Horsfall Stadium with his stunning strike.
The forward was racing into the area when he controlled a chipped cross on his chest and volleyed the ball home from the right-hand corner of the penalty area.
Telford goalkeeper Ryan Young was as much of a spectator as the supporters on the back row of the main stand.
The home side had been the better side in the opening stages but it was Telford who broke the deadlock. Poor defending by Avenue left Adam Farrell unmarked and he buried Wes Baynes’ cross with a powerful header.
Avenue were disorientated as the visitors had a brief spell on top but got back into the game and netted a deserved equaliser just before the half-hour mark.
Avenue skipper Nathan Hotte’s free-kick from deep was converted by James Knowles’ glancing header.
Boshell’s magical finish put Avenue into the lead in the 63rd minute but the contest was far from over. The visitors pushed forward again, changes were made from the bench and the home side were on the back foot once more.
Controversy surrounded Bradford’s third goal, which came from a 77th-minute penalty after Alex Davidson had been brought down. Davidson was clean through and one on one with visiting keeper Young, who brought him down.
The card that referee Matthew Parry produced was yellow, a call that incensed the home fans and perplexed Avenue’s players and staff. But Richard Marshall remained cool and drilled the spot-kick into the bottom corner of the net.
Avenue boss John Deacey was delighted with the win and the performance of his players, saying: “I thought we were excellent.
“We showed great spirit to turn the game around after going a goal down – but we have got that determination. It was a very good victory against a very good side.”
