Brown and Magoffin dig in to frustrate Yorkshire
Sussex's batsmen made Yorkshire's bowlers work hard for their successes in the second session of the first day at Hove and by the tea interval Ben Brown and Steve Magoffin had taken the score to 237-7 with an unbroken stand of 73 for the eighth wicket.
The afternoon's play had begun well for Yorkshire when Steve Patterson defeated Matt Prior's seemingly textbook forward defensive shot and uprooted the England wicketkeeper's off stump when he had made 23. Ashar Zaidi then made an attractive 17 but was lbw to Ryan Sidebottom to leave Sussex poorly placed on 164-7.
However, No 9 Magoffin batted with admirable good sense and was unbeaten on 25 at the tea interval.
By that stage, Brown, who had made 93 against Yorkshire in the first match of the season, had advanced to 61 not out and Sussex's total was beginning to look much more respectable.
