Braces for James Wilson and Lee Queeley spur Cleckheaton to fine away win
Malton & Norton 23, Cleckheaton 31
Cleckheaton followed up their excellent pre season with a hard-earned bonus point win in their first SSE North One East outing.
The visitors were first on the scoresheet when James Wilson scythed through a wrong-footed defence following a well-timed pass from Michael Piper.
Ross Hayden missed the conversion, and Malton had a chance to reduce the arrears in the eighth minute but Chuck Ramsay's penalty went wide.
Cleckheaton increased their lead with a converted try from prop Paul Turner in the 21st minute but Malton stayed in the game with two Ramsay penalties prior to the break.
However, the visitors regained the upper hand in injury time at the interval with a Lee Queeley try, which was converted by Hayden.
Ramsey kicked a penalty for Malton in the 42nd minute but Wilson pushed Cleckheaton further in front with his second and his team's bonus-point try three minutes later.
Malton rallied and scored two converted tries in the space of five minutes from Pat Fifita and Henry Newitt.
However, it was the visitors who scored last with Queeley's second try, converted by Hayden.
