Bradford City building on momentous season
Garry Thompson has not been surprised by City’s smooth transition to League One life.
The Bantams have picked up eight points from the opening five games since promotion to sit seventh in the early table.
As they look to make it a hat-trick of home wins this afternoon against Brentford, winger Thompson feels City have still got the momentum from last term’s charge over the line.
“When you make the step up, it’s often hard to hit the ground running,” he said.
“We know that if we can do that, which we have to an extent, it can carry on the form from last year.
“We feel we’ve kept that momentum carrying on so far, which has made it a good start.”
City spent six years stuck in the basement division but there is plenty of higher-level nous within the squad. Thompson, who has played in both League One and the Championship, sees that as another advantage.
He said: “It’s easy to draw on that experience. We are a good team with good individuals and there’s a willingness to work tremendously hard.
“Sometimes you might not be having the best game. But if you can work hard and make sure the opponent you’re playing against isn’t at his best either, then you can help the team out massively in that way.
“The gaffer can see we’re equipped for this level. He believes in every single one of us, otherwise we wouldn’t be at the football club.
“That’s what it’s about. We’ve got a dressing room full of winners.
“As I said when I first signed, we knew if we got the momentum going that snowball effect would happen. This is a massive club.
“Last season was absolutely phenomenal and there’s no reason why, come May next year, we can’t be celebrating the same way.”
