Albion Sports and Brighouse Town march on in FA Cup
Albion Sports and Brighouse Town both booked their passage into the first qualifying round of the FA Cup last night with preliminary round replay victories.
Albion faced the toughest task as they had to travel to the outskirts of Newcastle for their midweek replay against South Shields but despite problems with unavailable players they triumphed 2-1.
They broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark when skipper Asif Hussain netted from the spot after David Brown had been fouled. They could have increased their lead in the first half but Karl Hall had a header cleared off the line and Brown just missed the target with a later attempt.
Albion got their second in the 73rd minute when Brown scored after Hall had played him through.
Although the home side pulled one back with a little under ten minutes remaining the comeback was scuppered after they had a man sent off.
Brighouse marched into the next round with a 4-0 win after wrestling home advantage away from Billingham Synthonia.
After the north-east outfit had salvaged a draw from Saturday’s original tie with an injury-time equaliser Town cut loose at home.
Danny Nadiole and Ernest Boafo scored in the first half while Tom Matthews and Nadiole, again, added after the interval. Nadiole was denied a hat-trick when Billingham keeper James Briggs saved his late penalty.
