Yorkshire still top after defeat so players shouldn’t need picking up
Gary Ballance column
It wasn’t a great feeling to lose our Championship game against Durham at Scarborough at the weekend. But to be honest, we just didn’t play our best cricket over the four days.
These things happen across a long season and I’m sure we’ll train hard over the next week and a bit, move on and be better when we get to Sussex next Wednesday.
We probably didn’t bowl our best to concede 573 in the first innings, which left us with a lot of work to do.
Then in our first innings with the bat, we played a few loose shots and lost seven wickets in that one session on Friday morning. That proved to be very costly because having to follow on the best part of 300 behind was tough.
We dug in second innings and made a fight of it but we just couldn’t hold on in the end.
I feel in good form, so to get run out off my first ball in the first innings was not ideal to say the least. But that’s what cricket’s about at times and you’ve just got to learn from it and move on.
We’ve got a week of hard training now where we can hopefully rectify a few of our mistakes with bat and ball.
Will we need picking up as a squad ahead of our next game? We are still top of the table with three games to go. We shouldn’t need picking up when you think about it like that.
If we win three games, we’ve got a very good chance of winning the Championship. We’ve just got to hope that Durham don’t win four!
All we can do is concentrate on ourselves and get ready for our next game at Sussex.
It’s going to be a proud moment for me being with the senior England squad in Ireland for a one-day international (at Malahide CC tomorrow). If I get a chance to play, hopefully I can take it.
I was 12th man for a few games against New Zealand in the Twenty20s earlier in the summer and it was good to be in the squad for that to see how everything works.
I’ve obviously played a few Lions games over the last winter and through the summer as well. I’ve been around a lot of the players and I’m really looking forward to the experience. It should be an enjoyable couple of days.
