Cleckheaton are Mor the merrier
Morley 14 Cleckheaton 26
Cleckheaton earned a comprehensive Yorkshire Cup prelimary round victory over their old rivals to complete an excellent pre-season.
The first half-hour was all one-way traffic, with the visitors dominating both possession and territory.
Three well-constructed tries from Richard Piper, Ross Hayden and James Marshall, plus three conversions from the excellent Hayden, put Cleckheaton in the driving seat.
It wasn’t until the 35th minute that Morley were able to exert pressure, resulting in a try for hooker Kyle Scott, which was converted by Charlie Spon-Smith.
With the strong wind at their backs Morley came more into the game at the start of the second half and a try from Bradley Marshall, converted by Mark Chester, reduced the arrears.
However, Cleckheaton regained the ascendancy, especially in the set scrums, and a try from Oliver Akroyd following excellent work from new player-coach Rob
Afoa-Peterson settled nerves.
Hayden missed the conversion but the game was won and the team can now look forward with confidence to the start of the league season next Saturday at Malton and the resumption of the county cup in February.
