Clayton A captured the Monday Evening League (Thurston – Division One) title for the fourth successive season after finishing with a 26-0 drubbing of Royd House as main rivals Ladyhill A slipped up 16-10 at Shipley Club A.

With five matches left, Clayton looked second favourites as Ladyhill found themselves 20-points clear, although Clayton had the easier run-in.

But 101 points from those games saw Clayton take the title by a margin of ten points, with Ladyhill A finishing runners-up while Myrtle A and Royd House are relegated.

Averages (top ten): Steve Cooper (Ladyhill A) +7.71 (played 14), Richard Bloodworth (Ladyhill A) +5.65 (17), Paul Gill (Clayton A) +5.33 (18), Andrew Denton (Asa Briggs A) +4.67 (18), Paul Hillam (Clayton A) +4.41 (17), Tony Riley (Clayton A) +4.39 (18), Peter Oliver (Ladyhill A) +4.12 (17), David Scott (Clayton A) +3.76 (17), David Bland (Shipley Club B) +3.63 (16), Andrew Matthews (Royd House) +2.93 (15).

Ladyhill B took the Robert Bland (Division Two) title after finishing a point ahead of Oakenshaw A, who make a quick return to the top flight. It will be a first next season, with three B teams in the top section.

Ladyhill knew any home win over basement club Eccleshill A would see them take the title but it seemed like the nerves set in as they only just edged a 14-12 verdict against a team who had only won once all season.

Relegated with Eccleshill are West Bradford A, who will be disappointed after finishing in mid-table last season and above promoted Ladyhill B.

Averages: Neil Rankin (Oakenshaw A) +6.14 (14), Craig Fenton (Crowghyll A) +5.38 (16), Phil Lister (Oakenshaw A) +4.50 (16), Andrew Ellis (Spen Victoria) +4.20 (15), Darren Owthwaite (Ladyhill B) +3.93 (14), Mark Ellis (Drighlington B) +3.86 (14), Eddie Hill (Spen Victoria) +3.77 (13), David Hodgson (Crowghyll A) +3.29 (14), Eric Butler (Ladyhill B) +3.21 (14), Trevor Wormsan (Drighlington B) +3.19 (16).

In the City Sports (Division Three) section, the top two played each other as Birkenshaw A entertained Tyersal A. Both teams knew they were already promoted but were playing for the title.

Tyersal held an eight-point advantage, so knew that ten points at Birkenshaw would see them crowned champions. But Birkenshaw had other ideas as they carded five home winners to take the game 19-7, as well as the championship.

Brackenhill A and Pudsey Littlemoor are relegated after disappointing seasons.

Averages: Pam Lindley (Tyersal A) +9.64 (14), Andrew Firth (Peel B) +6.54 (13), Steve Alred (Crowghyll B) +6.13 (16), Wendy Shimbles (Tyersal A) +4.93 (14), Stuart Blaylock (Birkenshaw A) +4.42 (12), David Earl (Myrtle B) +4.31 (16), Eddie Mordue (Birkenshaw A) +4.21 (14), Wayne Woodhead (Tyersal A) +4.00 (12), Laurie Taylor (Birkenshaw A) +3.93 (15), Simon Metcalfe (Tyersal A) +3.07 (14).

Wibsey B took the Carter’s Sports (Division Four) title at a canter after winning 14 out of 16 games to finish 64 points ahead of runners-up Birkenshaw B, who were the only team to beat them all season.

Bowling A were the only other team to stop Wibsey winning after holding the champions to a 13-13 draw back in April. Thornton A and Troydale are both relegated.

Averages: Michael Sansome (Wibsey B) +9.23 (13), Richard Hunter (Birkenshaw B) +6.71 (14), James Klenk (Wibsey B) +5.13 (16), David Kent (Birkenshaw B) +4.73 (15), Marlene Hughes (Oakenshaw B) +4.71 (14), George Gledhill (Wibsey B) +3.79 (14), Kathleen Field (Heckmondwike B) +3.75 (16), Audrey Healy (West) +3.57 (14), John Stevenson (Wibsey B) +3.47 (15), Eddie Temple (Heckmondwike B) +2.80 (15).

Drighlington C finished top of the Worthington Sports (Division Five) section, 52 points ahead of runners-up Royd House B.

Drighlington, who were relegated from Division Four last season after a restructure, made up for that disappointment by taking the Worthington title for the second time in three seasons.

Royd House B took second spot despite a final-day 15-11 home defeat to Clayton B. Wibsey C and Oakenshaw C are relegated, with Wibsey only managing three wins all season.

Averages: Rob Ellis (Royd House B) +9.88 (16), Bernard Criddle (Shipley Club D) +8.64 (14), Jamie Wilczynski (Wibsey C) +8.40 (15), Rachel Telford (Eccleshill B) +6.58 (12); Malcolm Grainger (Greengates) +6.29 (14), Rod Fox (Drighlington C) +5.85 (13), Patricia Sunderland (Drighlington C) +5.60 (15), Andrew Lee (Drighlington C) +5.33 (15), Will Gilroy (Eccleshill B) +5.33 (12), Barry Humphreys (Royd House B) +4.60 (15).

It was a close finish in the Clues Sports (Division Six) league between Heckmondwike C and Bowling B. Heckmondwike held an 11-point advantage going into the last games and were away to basement club Brackenhill B, while Bowling B were at Bradford Moor B.

Heckmondwike went down to a surprise 16-10 loss, which they still felt would be good enough to see them take the title.

But news then came through that Bowling had romped to a 20-6 win, so out came the calculators and Heckmondwike were relieved to take the title by a single point. Brackenhill B were the unlucky team to finish bottom of the league.

Averages: Geoff Hudson (Bradford Moor B) +6.92 (13), Maureen Sykes (Heckmondwike C) +6.62 (13), Roy Burton (Peel C) +6.56 (16); Joan Reid (Tyersal B) +6.31 (13), June Harrison (Thornton B) +5.33 (15), Jackie Swindell (Bowling B) +5.13 (15), Roy Schofield (Bowling C) +4.92 (12), Raymond Leadbetter (Wibsey D) +4.79 (14), Shirley Hudson (Bradford Moor B) +3.46 (13), Hayley Lay (Heckmondwike C) +3.38 (14).

* Ladyhill A retained the Pairs League (Allan Stubbs – Division One) title after finishing 64 points ahead of closest challengers Birkenshaw.
