Yorkshire close in on innings victory
Yorkshire worked hard to secure three more wickets towards a crucial County Championship win over Nottinghamshire that will extend their lead at the top of the Division One table.
Despite a determined unbeaten 52 from captain Chris Read, the hosts slipped from 118-4 overnight to reach 212-7 at lunch, still 45 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat.
Ryan Sidebottom gave Yorkshire a flying start by dismissing David Hussey from the fifth ball of the third day when he edged behind to give the former England left-arm seamer his 596th first-class victim, bringing him level with dad Arnie’s career total.
But far from spark another Nottinghamshire collapse, that early breakthrough signalled the start of some solid resistance as Read led the way with his first championship half-century of the season.
He shared a 47-run sixth-wicket stand with Riki Wessels, who fell to a brilliant catch from Adam Lyth at second slip, diving across Kane Williamson at first slip to take the edge off Jack Brooks.
Adil Rashid then had Ajmal Shahzad caught at mid-wicket shortly before lunch.
