Bradford Park Avenue boss John Deacey backs his troops to come good
Park Avenue boss John Deacey admits he is mystified why his side underperformed in the opening two fixtures but is confident the old adage ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’ will prove true.
“We were absolutely shocking at home last Monday (4-0 defeat to North Ferriby United) and that is not like one of my teams,” said Deacey.
“It has been a very disappointing start but we have just got to graft and get through this little spell.
“They haven’t become bad players overnight, they are all proven at this level and I will stand by them.
“I have thought about things time after time and wondered just what I was doing wrong but I really can’t put my finger on it.
“We just haven’t quite been at it. The players have not been at their best.”
The manager praised the supporters for their patience on Monday saying they had been ‘excellent’ and got behind the side.
Deacey accepts that having five big players missing could be mitigating circumstances but he refused to hide behind that. With skipper Nathan Hotte, close season signing Chib Chilaka, Jordan Deacey, Jamie Price and the dependable Martin Drury all out, the only thing Deacey cursed his luck on was Louie Swain.
The young striker was drafted in on a month-long loan from neighbours Bradford City just before Monday’s fixture.
Swain played 66 minutes against Ferriby but already the frontman looks set to be sidelined.
Deacey said: “He couldn’t train on Thursday night so, for me, that rules him out of this weekend’s two games.
“You can’t recover that quickly.
“It’s a shame for the poor lad – it seems to be his pelvis that is the problem.
“We can’t win can we? We get one in because we have a few out, he gets one game and then we lose him!
“But it gives someone else a chance who might not have got into the starting line-up so soon in the season.
“It’s up to whoever comes in to grab that chance so that when these boys are fit again they have to battle to get their place back.”
