Georgia Malir and Tom Adams earn world selection
Ilkley international duo Georgia Malir and Tom Adams have earned selection for the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team competing at next month’s World Mountain Running Championships in Poland.
Malir won the junior women’s trial race at Whinlatter Forest, with Zara Knappy of Keighley just missing selection after her sixth-place finish. Adams was fourth in the senior men’s trial to qualify.
Clayton pulled away from Sarah Tunstall of Kendal to win her event in 44min 25sec, while Wilkinson looked good in third as she regains form after injury.
On the flat, Bradford 10K winner Tesfaye Debele won the highly competitive Manchester 5K Sizzler at Wythenshawe Park in 14:33.
The Bradford Airedale AC member beat Blackburn’s Ben Fish and Leeds City international James Walsh, who tied for second in 14:39. Andy Norman of Altrincham also beat 15 minutes to finish fourth.
Claire Duck (Leeds City) was first lady in 16:32, just ahead of Scunthorpe’s Sarah Kemshall. Andy Bedford of Saltaire also enjoyed his trip across the Pennines to run 16:52, which was 39th among the 460 finishers.
The York Millennium Bridge 5K was won in 15:34 by Steve Worthington (Lancaster & Morecambe).
Wharfedale under-17 star James Hall was fourth in 15:59, while Bingley’s John Convery was best over-50 in 16:48.
Skyrac’s Zack Whitehead ran 17:38 for 25th of the 145 runners in the main event of the four-race evening festival.
Entries are flowing in for the Bradford City Runs on October 27. The majority are currently opting for the 10K, two-lap option, with the four-lap half marathon almost as popular. The 5K run is attracting beginners and joggers.
Holly Williams, coach of South Leeds Ladies running group, said: “The ladies are really looking forward to doing a big event together.”
As a group registered with RunEngland, they will be raising cash to get more leaders qualified to train the expanding group.
Any other informal running groups, particularly those linked to RunEngland, are encouraged to contact race director Mark Hetherington for further details.
Race entry is at http://bradfordcityruns.co.uk and further information at www.sportsshare.org/events/bradfordcityruns.
