Fans can spur us on to crucial victory - Cougars boss Paul March
Paul March has urged fans to turn out in force as Cougars bid to move closer to safety and a possible Kingstone Press Championship play-off spot in Sunday's home clash with high-flying Featherstone Rovers.
Cougars are in the curious position of knowing they could still be relegated but also finish in the top eight with three matches remaining.
March’s side claimed a potentially priceless bonus point from their 25-18 defeat at Workington on Wednesday evening.
The re-arranged match was Cougars’ second trip to Cumbria in four days, following their 52-18 success at Whitehaven last Sunday, and left them five points above the drop zone and four points shy of the play-off places.
Now back on home soil this weekend, March is keen that his men put on a show for the Cougar Park faithful against second-placed Featherstone.
After Sunday's visit of Rovers, Cougars face another title contender on home soil in derby rivals Halifax next Thursday before ending their campaign with another trip to Cumbria at Barrow on Sunday, September 1.
March added: “It’s a big game for us at home on Sunday because the last time we played at Cougar Park we lost 46-6 to Batley, and I had to apologise to our supporters.
“Hopefully we can get a big crowd down there this weekend and give the fans a performance to be proud of.
“The fans have been great all season, and the more of them we can get down to Cougar Park for this one the better.
“The next three games are massive for us but we showed what we are capable of last weekend at Whitehaven and hopefully we can now reproduce that kind of performance on home soil.”
Cougars suffered two injury blows at Workington in midweek, with James Haley suffering a dislocated shoulder and Danny Lawton a suspected broken ankle.
But they are in otherwise decent health and were boosted this week when it was revealed that winger Paul White has agreed a deal to stay at the club next season.
