Ross Daly wants to make up for lost time with Bradford Park Avenue
Bradford Park Avenue Avenue missed out on a clean sweep of friendly victories when their pre-season fixtures ended with a 1-0 home defeat to Bradford City last Monday.
It was Avenue’s eighth warm-up game, and they had won the previous seven.
Not only was it their only negative result but the local skirmish was also the only game in which they failed to score.
“The friendly games were very good and we wanted to win them all. We know there is nothing resting on them but every win brings confidence,” said midfielder Ross Daly, who conceded the penalty that was to be the difference between the sides in the Bradford derby.
Rafael de Vita netted the spot-kick past Avenue keeper John Lamb after Daly was guilty of a clumsy challenge in his own area.
The setback will not affect Daly too badly as he looks forward to the start of the new season tomorrow.
Avenue make the long journey to Leamington for their Conference North opener, and Daly is expecting to be involved.
This time last year as Avenue made their return to the division following promotion, Daly was on crutches.
“I really want to have a good crack at it this season,” said the midfielder. “I know it’s a tough league but I feel I missed out on a lot last season.
"We had Chester and Halifax in this division last season, and this time we will have Stockport County and Guiseley again.
“They are big clubs and its great to be playing the likes of them - you pick up the fixture list when it comes out and you look forward to certain dates.
"We tend to do well against the bigger clubs, we did last season and when we were in the UniBond League.
“But raising your game for a few times is different to being consistent throughout a full season so we are looking to improve on what we did last year. It was great right up until the last few weeks but we want to be in the mix right until the end this year.
“All the lads think we have a chance of the play offs this around.”
