Wharfedale step up pre-season preparations
Wharfedale head coach Jon Feeley has stepped up the intensity of the club’s pre-season ahead of their opening friendly at Stourbridge this Saturday.
Feeley, who has taken the reins after serving under Tom McGee last year, prepared his team for his first game in charge for their annual fixture at Stouton Park with a trip to Odsal Stadium.
From there, his troops had to climb up and down the punishing steps at the home of the Bradford Bulls.
Feeley is now hoping to see his players make a further leap forward this weekend as he looks to make his mark in the hot-seat.
“Pre-season is going very well and the boys are working really hard,” said Feeley.
“The Odsal run was horrible for the players but they all managed to do it and they all look to be fighting fit.
“I’m really looking forward to starting out the season. It’s a great club and I want to help take it even further forward from last year.
“The Stourbridge game is always a finding out period for us. I’ve got my own ideas but what we really need to do is develop our players’ attributes and skills which they already have to help us improve further for the season.”
Harry Skelton, Nathan Myers, Ollie Cicognini, Tom Margetson, Tom Barrett and brothers Will and Robbie Davidson are the seven new faces this year.
And Feeley was particularly delighted with Barrett’s signature, after the fly half starred for the club last year after a loan spell from Doncaster, and was also looking forward to Will and Robbie joining older brother Tom Davidson.
“We’re hoping that Tom Barrett can continue on showing the form he did last year for the club.
“He’s an outstanding kicker of the ball and teams feared giving a penalty a way against us because he would always convert.
“But he can also control the game with his dynamic range of distribution and pace.
“All the Davidson brothers bring something a little bit different.
"Robbie plays at the back and is really quick, whereas Tom and Will toughen us up and there should be a really good mix there for us throughout the season.”
