Nahki Wells is ready to raise the bar in League One by declaring: I can score 30.

City’s top scorer bagged a 26-goal haul in their hugely successful promotion campaign – and now he has set his sights on topping that tally at the next level.

Wells has scored in both pre-season friendlies so far, although he is likely to have a limited role at Bohemians tomorrow as Phil Parkinson starts with the players who came off the bench against Athlone.

The 22-year-old striker is confident the goals can keep flowing when City kick off in the third tier in just over a fortnight.

Wells said: “Last season was a high standard but I always try and look to repeat what I’ve done before. I’m still young and want to keep growing as a player.

“I set the target for 25 last season and reached that, so I’m definitely going for 30 this year.

“Anything’s possible. I’ve got off to a good start and, knock on wood, I’m injury free. I see no reason why I can’t reach 30.”

Wells expects there will be plenty of goals to go round. The arrival of Mark Yeates and Jason Kennedy will increase the productivity from midfield and they are likely to be followed by Raffaele De Vita – a deal for him is thought to be in the offing.

Bermudian hit-man Wells said: “We’ve brought two very good players into the squad who are both attack-minded. That takes a bit off my shoulders but also helps in a way because they are very creative players.

“The more players like that you have, the more opportunities the team will get.

“I should be on the end of a lot of chances this year, so hopefully that gives me the reason to hit 30. But I see a lot of lads in double figures this season, not only myself.

“We have the ideal squad for that level with a bit of individual brilliance, good continuity and willing runners.”

Wells insists the transfer speculation surrounding his own future will not prove a distraction. City recently rejected a bid from Peterborough, while the likes of Burnley, Huddersfield and Bournemouth have all been watching his progress.

He said: “I take it with a pinch of salt but most of the rumours are incorrect. It just means you’re doing something well if you attract interest.

“The manager spoke to me about the Peterborough issue. In a way, I didn’t like that it reached the press before I actually knew.

“But however the situation panned out, it didn’t really bother me. I just got on with it and I’m not too focused on moving sideways.

“I’m a contracted player at Bradford City and the moment I take my eye off the prize of the first game on August 3, then I’m letting my team down.”
