A partnership which only came together on the eve of one of the top domestic tournaments at Crow Nest sprung a surprise as they won the Evans Bowl.

Prolific club major winner James Burke was still looking for a playing partner during the evening celebrations of the pro-am when Mally Ozanne overheard his comments and agreed to play with him.

On a bright and blustery day, playing on excellent fast greens, the pair claimed the top prize with a great score of nett 61.4.

They won the trophy by a good margin from Chris Stirk and Ian Moxon, who returned a score of 64.6 to take runners-up position on countback from Dennis McAullife and Paul Morrison.

This was Ozanne’s first major success and now qualifies him to play in Crow Nest’s annual Masters competition.

Meanwhile, 24 local low-handicappers competed for the Everitt Cup in Crow Nest’s annual scratch open.

The weather delivered its best, with brilliant sunshine throughout the event.

The course was presented in tremendous condition, with true and fast greens, although scoring was surprisingly high as tough pin positions on key holes made life tough.

The overall winner was Richard Broadley (Huddersfield), who won on countback with a gross score of 74 ahead of Andy Shaw (Bradley Hall).

Host club player Chris Wood took the best nett prize with a 69 playing off a handicap of 11.

Crow Nest head greenkeeper Rob Gee won the nearest-the-pin prize, while the longest drive on the 18th hole was won by visitor Tom Williams.
