Elliott Whitehead is facing the biggest decision of his career after the Bulls accepted an offer from Salford for his services.

The homegrown second-rower recently handed in a transfer request and told coach Francis Cummins he wished to join a “top four club”.

But Brian Noble’s City Reds – currently bottom of the Super League table and fighting to avoid the wooden spoon – appear to be his only viable option.

Ryan Whitcut, the Bulls’ general manager, said Salford were the only team to meet their valuation of a player who is contracted to the club until the end of 2016.

Although Catalan Dragons are also believed to have shown strong interest in the player, Whitcut said: “There have been tentative offers and interest from other clubs but Salford are the only club to have a bid accepted.

“That fee remains confidential and it’s up to Elliott and his agent to discuss personal terms. He either accepts the move to Salford or remains a Bradford player.

“I don’t think there are as many options there for Elliott as he thought there would be when he handed in his transfer request.”

Salford owner Dr Marwan Koukash yesterday told the Telegraph & Argus that he hoped to bring Whitehead to his struggling club.

He confirmed a fee had been agreed and that it was now up to the 23-year-old to decide on his next move.

If a deal can be brokered, Whitehead could be in line to make his debut for Salford in their home game with St Helens on Friday.

“It is entirely up to the player now,” said Koukash.

“A fee has been agreed with Bradford and Brian (Noble) is keen to sign Elliott.

“We will do everything in the proper way. We will talk to the club, which we have done, and we will agree a fee, which we have done. At the end of the day, it is up to the player if he wants to come. We can’t force the player.

“All that we have done is give ourselves a chance.”

Koukash rescued Salford from the brink of a financial disaster when he bought the club earlier this year.

But, despite the appointment of legendary former Bulls boss Noble on an 18-month deal in April, the City Reds have struggled to attract players to the club.

They prop up the table after having two points deducted for having 14 players on the pitch during their win over Castleford in April.

Yet Koukash has ambitions to transform their fortunes in the coming years and says the arrival of Whitehead would be one of up to ten new recruits for next season.

The millionaire racehorse owner said: “Of course we would like Elliott here but he’s part of a bigger picture.

“Literally as we speak, we are chasing between eight and ten players – all of whom are of the same calibre if not better than Elliott.

“We intend to make a massive impact on Super League next year.”

The Bulls, meanwhile, remain hopeful of completing the signing of Warrington prop Garreth Carvell this week.
