Eccleshill United were finally downed as an excellent eight-game Baris Northern Counties East League Division One unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt at home to Selby Town yesterday.

The visitors were also in the middle of a rich vein of form and have strengthened their squad with some good recent signings.

Even so it was a surprise defeat and the first Bobby Davison’s Eagles have tasted since a 3-1 reverse to promotion-chasing Knaresborough Town, also at home, on the opening Saturday of the year.

Selby took an early lead when Tom Owen opened the scoring in just the second minute.

Jackson Patillo struck a 19th-minute leveller but the visitors still took a lead into the break after Luke Hall had netted on the half-hour.

Eagles’ leading scorer Marcus Edwards equalised just three minutes after the interval but Selby edged back in front four minutes later, Owen again being on target.

A late brace from Jack Wooley saw Selby home to a comfortable win.

Jaded Eccleshill dropped off the pace and Wooley struck just after the hour and again with a 79th- minute penalty.

The Eagles have a free midweek before Saturday’s trip to Hemsworth MW.
