PLYMOUTH 0 CITY 0

Frustrated City were held to a third draw on the bounce at relegation-haunted Plymouth.

Garry Thompson had their best chance with an early one-on-one but was denied by Jake Cole's outstretched leg.

Thompson also clipped the top of the bar while Plymouth's best player, on-loan Crystal Palace winger Jason Banton hit the post.

City pushed for a goal late on but could not find a breakthrough, Kyel Reid seeing his shot parried and James Hanson's rebound being deflected narrowly wide.

But the draw moves them no nearer the top seven.

9:42pm

Mayhem in City box as McArdle panicky clearance falls short of Duke. Keeper is bundled over as he tries to catch and two Argyle players look to force it in but McHugh's there.

Mad finish to game but it's 0-0.

9:41pm

Connell shot blocked on edge of box.

9:39pm

But ref blows for foul against Hanson.

9:39pm

Reid cross turned over bar by Bhasera under pressure from Atkinson. Chance for City from corner.

9:39pm

Reid held back by Blanchard but ref instead points for goal kick. Winger felt he was fouled and it looked it.

9:37pm

Connell tries a chip but easy for keeper.

9:35pm

Six added minutes to play.

9:33pm

Here come City again but Reid is crowded out in penalty area.

9:32pm

Two Plymouth subs. Debutant Bryan makes way for Harvey and Cowan-Hall replaces Gurrieri.

9:31pm

9:28pm

Now it's Connell with a chance but the shot is saved low down.

9:27pm

Reid shot saved by Cole and Hanson's follow-up is deflected agonisingly wide.

9:26pm

Miskick by Cox to Thompson, whose shot hits the top of the bar. That was his final touch as on comes Connell.

9:23pm

Second City sub, Atkinson for Hines.

9:22pm

Inviting cross from Banton is too strong for Gurrieri at the back post as McHugh covers.

9:21pm

15 mins to go plus hefty amount of stoppage time. City need a goal from somewhere.

9:19pm

Plymouth free-kick 30 yards out but smashed well wide by Wotton.

9:17pm

Another delay as Bhasera gets treatment. Could be a fair bit of stoppage time again.

9:14pm

Sub for Plymouth as Reid replaced by Chadwick.

9:14pm

Another good corner from Doyle but it beats everyone in the packed six-yard box.

9:14pm

Doyle free-kick headed over the bar by Bhasera for a City corner.

9:13pm

Blanchard is booked for the foul and hurt himself doing it.

9:12pm

Gray subbed by Hanson. Ironic cheer from some in the away end.

9:12pm

City thought they had a penalty as Reid is brought down right on edge of box. But free-kick awarded yard outside.

9:11pm

Awkward dipping shot from Banton and Duke does well to hold it on the floor.

9:10pm

Ravenhill booked after one foul too many. Just had a lecture from ref warning no more.

9:08pm

Scrappy spell as Reuben Reid and Bryan have shots charged down in the City box.

9:06pm

City shout for handball as Gray shot hits Wotton but ref is unimpressed.

9:05pm

Corner for City and the 174 followers make some noise. It's a good one from Doyle but McHugh heads wide.

9:03pm

Banton, Plymouth's best player by far, has another shot through Darby's legs but Duke saves low down.

9:00pm

Corner for Plymouth but offside flag stops their momentum.

8:57pm

Banton tries shot from tight angle and hits outside of post.

8:56pm

Crowd is 5,609 with 174 from City.

8:53pm

Gray chests back for Doyle but it's another shot well wide.

8:51pm

City kick off second half. No changes for other side.

8:49pm

8:34pm

Half-time 0-0

8:34pm

McHugh comes running in to meet it but his radar is awry.

8:34pm

Corner for City right on half-time.

8:33pm

Plymouth press think Branston was fortunate not to see red. It was very late.

8:32pm

Yellow card for the ex-City man.

8:31pm

Branson gone right through Thompson from behind.

8:30pm

Darby up and under cleared to edge of box where McHugh smashes volley into orbit.

8:30pm

Thompson not happy with Branston's aggressive approach.

8:27pm

City free-kick 30 yards out. Reid curls over the wall but it's a comfortable save for Cole.

8:26pm

Thompson cuts inside from Reid pass but Cox makes sliding block to deny him shot in box.

8:24pm

Miscommunication at back for Plymouth as Branston hooks ball out of Cole's hands.

8:20pm

Bloopy header from Gray is caught on line by Cole.

8:17pm

With Accrington losing 1-0, Plymouth are off the bottom as it stands.

8:16pm

Gurrieri has room to line up 25 yard shot but it's well over the bar.

8:15pm

Davies gets a whack in the chops in penalty area but nothing given.

8:15pm

City fans making themselves heard for the first time.

8:11pm

Banton cuts back to Gurrieri whose shot is cleared in front of line by McHugh. City under some pressure.

8:10pm

Poor pass from Thompson intercepted by Banton whose shot is parried by Duke.

8:08pm

Another Plymouth corner. Banton beginning to get on the ball and cause a threat.

8:05pm

8:03pm

Been told that Chris Waddle is in the crowd tonight.

8:02pm

Duke flaps Bryan's kick away rather unconvincingly but cross back into the box is a poor one.

8:01pm

Corner for Plymouth.

7:59pm

Kyel Reid drills free-kick low but it is poor and well wide.

7:58pm

Handball outside the box gives City free-kick in good position.

7:55pm

Gray heads over bar from City corner.

7:54pm

Long ball over top springs Plymouth offside trap to leave Thompson clear on goal. Great chance to open scoring but Cole pushes shot behind.

7:53pm

Reid cross is turned over by Gurrieri who had nipped in at City near post.

7:45pm

7:45pm

7:43pm

Brass band music greets the arrival of the teams.

7:42pm

Plymouth beat Barnet in last home game but have not won back to back at Home Park in the league all season.

7:38pm

7:36pm

7:35pm

Referee Andy Davies (not to be confused with Andrew Davies...) has awarded ten penalties in 19 games.

7:34pm

Andy Gray's inclusion over Alan Connell has raised eyebrows among fans. The veteran striker is still waiting to open his account for his second spell with City - tonight would be a good place to start.

7:32pm

7:32pm

7:29pm

Not the happiest hunting ground for City - won only once in the last 12 visits to Home Park. Remember August 1994? Hammered Argyle 5-1 with a Paul Jewell hat-trick.

7:18pm

7:17pm

7:10pm

7:10pm

Paul Wotton making his 468th appearance for Plymouth.

7:06pm

Plymouth handed an immediate debut to Bristol City midfielder Joe Bryan who only signed on loan this afternoon.

Guy Branston also lined up at centre half - the third time he had faced City this season with a third different team.

PLYMOUTH: Cole, Blanchard, Wotton, Branston, Bhasera, Gurrieri, Cox, Hourihane, Bryan, Reid, Banton. Subs: Berry, Cowan-Hall, Young, Chadwick, Murray, Harvey, Chenoweth.

6:53pm

Welcome from Home Park where Phil Parkinson has made six changes to his City side.

Matt Duke returns in goal and Andrew Davies is back at centre half for Michael Nelson.

Parkinson has named both wingers in midfield with Gary Jones given a breather in the centre as Nathan Doyle partners Ricky Ravenhill.

And both strikers have changed - but there is no Alan Connell, whose last-gasp penalty saved a point against Aldershot on Saturday. Instead Andy Gray is paired with Garry Thompson.

CITY: Duke, Darby, McArdle, Davies, McHugh, Hines, Doyle, Ravenhill, Reid, Thompson, Gray. Subs: Hanson, Atkinson, Wells, Jones, Nelson, Connell, McLaughlin.

Nelson in the starting line-up and on the bench! Come on Simon.

No Wells, Hanson or Connell? Bizarre! I hope that this works PP 'cos we need points right now. Really thought Connell would get a start tonight alongside Thompson or Hanson. There is rotation and their is madness!! Hines and Reid need stormers for this to work.

Come on City!!

Whilst Branston is a solid centre Half, he's not the quickest.

With Gray upfront and Tommo, I am not not sure we have pace to upset the centre backs.

I hope I am wrong.

Fair point Victor; it was poor.

I would still love to see the data that PP sees on fitness etc that has led to this team being selected. Approx 42 goals sat on the bench and approx 16 in the starting line-up?

It must be difficult for players to establish playing relationships with each other when there is so little consistency. I share you "wish" though; otherwise he season is ebbing away and I will be thoroughly miserable all week.

I think realistically we need to win both these next two games. Do that and we'll be at worst 6 points behind Exeter having played two games less, so effectively it would still be in our hands.

Let's do all we can to win these games and not die wondering.

Well what a surprise. Useless waste of money Gray substituted for Hanson. Parky you have got it so wrong both in signing Gray and not a goal scorer and your selections. If I were Connell I would move on. He is treated appallingly and is head and shoulders above others with his link up and intelligent play. Maybe city might nick one but the constant tinkering and so called freshening up is not working.

I'll say it now. Not bothered if parky stays or goes now, season over. 20 shots still no goals, pathetic. We've been poor all season except first 8 games. Too negative, dont get me started on connel. Cup run was great but guess we used all our luck up. We've no excuse, top 3 budget, god knows what we'd have done without the wembley money. He's signed some good players on top wages and still not got them to perform in the league, our bread and butter so i cant see all the clamour for him to stay, doubt he'll be cheap now.

At least we r not worrying about relegation however recent form suggest we should b grateful for our early season form. Now to start planning for next season who will remain who will leave. I recall b4 the CUP FINAL that the directors at CITY said they would be HAPPY with L2 next season...So, now that they have got their wish, is MR P the man to spend whatever money IS available and bring in the men who can do the job of getting this club promoted. It isnt on THIS Season..unless we start winning and others FALL miserably, this season is a failure...to those who went 2nite and spent good money, I am sorry, i only live 100 miles away. based on what has been written prior to my comment, it has been a wasted nite, Plymouth are bottom and we couldnt WIN...how much money does the manager need to spend in order to get a squad that can get out of this league...Personally, i would have preferred promotion to a wembley trip, i went and cheered and yelled, for nothing...and tonite its been the same

Disappointing result tonight. 3 pts a must at Exeter otherwise it will be deffo league 2 next season. Thanks Parkinson for the cup memories bar the final result however the recent results prove you should have signed a goal scorer and not a lump of wood called Gray. He is utter garbage and a waste of wages. Constant tinkering as not worked and it seems to me the manager is clueless as to his best team or combinations. Connell surely has got to start at Exeter but of course Parkinson won't do that will he.

Do we not practice shooting at goal in training? Once again we fail to impress against bottom of the division tosh. PP is a pretentionist. he comes back from Wembley, makes a Churchillian speach
then reality happens, D&R Aldershot and now P.Argyle. All these games should have been won easily. Instead we have to endure 80 mins of dross before he brings on Connell. If it wasnt for the cup run this guy would be out of a job!

Can't be serious calling for Parky to go? Surely?
The cup run we had was out of this world, and the harsh reality is that it has come at the cost of a serious promotion push.
We had this at the end of last season where Syers couldn't get a start, and Parky was right... Now Syers is banished into non-league football and doing sh1te... Oh hang on...
Wells should have started tonight. He'd have a field day against Branston for pace, even if he is having a bad spell. Keep Parky in, more class signings over the summer and automatic if not champions next year. Premier League in 4 seasons time. Champions league winners in 6.

Bradford1903 says...
12:27am Wed 13 Mar 13

To not score in a game we desperately needed to win sums it up for me.

In our position we need to take more risks to win games, but Parky seems unable to veer from his naturally conservative default setting.

Really don't understand bringing on Atkinson, as it's a sub you would make when you are trying to see out a game. If Hines was tiring just switch Thompson to the right, or even try Wells there for the last 10 mins.

The only positive was that Exeter also drew, so we've got to go and win there or it's season definitely over.

Bullcity says...
4:38am Wed 13 Mar 13

Such a shame that we have made 3 draws on the trot. Just remember the Wembley appearance is a motivator for the opposition who tend play above themselves against City.
It is a must win now at Exeter and then onwards .I think we will do well next season & finish in the top 3 of Div 2 .Give PP a further chance he will strengthen the squad in the summer and then we will see a diffference

Pp is now the true tinkerman talking over from Taylor. Tinkering can work in the premier league but in div 2. NO NO NO.

terrible result against the bottom team. GRAY IS SIMPLY NOT UP TO THE JOB AND AS NOT BEEN FOR A LONG TIME. A NEW MANAGER WILL SEE IT AND WE WILL HAVE ANOTHER COMPO BILL TO GET RID OF HIM.

he then brings on a holding midfield player as his first sub and brings on strikers with a few minutes to go. Honestly what can a player do in a couple of minutes or was it a time wasting exercise or did he really think he cold nick a 1-0? I have had reservations for a while now about Parky and feel he is a real Walter Mitty character defending away goalless draws when it is clear that we were awful against a bottom team.

Wy have those top scoreres on the bench and take them on such a journey as this. THE BOARD WILL BE LESS THAN IMPRESSED WITH RECENT RESULTS AND I WOULD SERIOUSLY ASK THEM TO RECONSIDER OPENING OR EXTENDING CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS

Maybe worth a try playing that formation. Although it might leave us bare at the back.
Need the promise of midfield tracking back.
Teams must love playing us as we are no goal threat at all.
As for Gray I would not even have him on the bench but will parky do that?
No! As it will prove him wrong that he is a total waste of good money.
I would rather have an up and coming youth player that him.

Normally Parky is a great speaker but for the first time it sounded like he was losing it. He as also in recent weeks looked for excuses where before he never mentioned injuries etc which would have been justified to some extent.

Think that he still doesn't know how to get us scoring goals. He carries the illusion of an attcking side with wingers when in reality the wingers are very focused on their defensive duties at the expense of attacking.

he plays two defensive mids whatever the opposition and we have very little scoring options.

Our goals created in open play must be shockingly low......
