Dragons women beat Sunderland City Predators 86-49 on Saturday and followed it up the next day with an 80-51 win over Mansfield Giants to clinch the VCARS.co.uk Women’s Division Two North title in their first season in the England Basketball National League.

Leading scorers against Sunderland were Vilma Jurgaityte (31) and Aleksandra Mazjakina (20), and the pair topped the scoring charts on Sunday too with 19 and 16 respectively, with Natalia Laing also contributing 16 points.

The title triumph completes a double for the women, who were also National Trophy winners this season.

Coach Mark Gunn said: “As a relatively new women’s basketball programme I’m sure we upset several other team’s aspirations but all the praise should go to the Dragons’ national league and supporting training players who helped the team step up to the challenge time and time again.”

The women are home to Bury Blue Devils on Saturday, tip-off at Bradford College 4.15pm.

The men’s first team then play Derby Trailblazers (6.15).
